The Theatre Bizarre
Down a seedy city street in her neighborhood, young Enola Penny is obsessed with what appears to be a long abandoned theatre. One night, she sees that the front door is slightly ajar and impulsively decides to sneak inside. But there in the dark, decrepit auditorium, a show unlike any other unfolds before her eyes. Its host is an eerie human puppet named Peg Poett who will introduce Penny to six tales of the bizarre: A couple traveling in a remote part of the French Pyrenees cross paths with a lustful witch; A paranoid lover faces the wrath of a partner who has been pushed to her limit; The Freudian dreams of an unfaithful husband blur the lines between fantasy and reality; The horrors of the real world are interpreted through the mind of a child; A woman addicted to other people's memories gets her fix through the vitreous fluid of her victims' eyeballs; And a perverse obsession with sweets turns sour for a couple in too deep.

A story that's too fascinating to pass by...
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
Watched this when I was drunk and this is the review I wrote " imo:Mother of Toads (Richard Stanley): 7 I Love You (Buddy Giovinazzno): 8 Wet Dreams (Tom Savini): 6 The Accident (Douglas Buck): 4 Vision Stains (Karim Hussain): 5 Sweets (David Gregory): 6 framing in between segments aka Theatre Guginol (Jeremy Kasten): 5"Not very in depth but I guess you get the general idea. Unlike other reviewers, I was not a huge fan of Theatre Guginol. It reminded me of silly 00's horror and I'm just really not the biggest fan. Being a fan of both Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, Mother of Toads was a talk treat for me. Just recently discovered Richard Stanley and I've got to say I enjoy him. At times the whole thing felt a bit cheap or silly but overall it was very enjoyable. The second segment, I Love you, reminded of the roles of the husband and wife in Zulawski's Possession. Maybe not as cerebral but it had just about as much blood. Wet Dreams was interesting although slightly confusing. Tom Savini, probably the biggest name in horror special FX, both directed and acted in this one. Wonderfully, I might add. First directing effort I've seen by him, but I hope it won't be the last. The Accident was slow and had an air of the depressive along with an artistic flourish that resulted in it serving as rather something of speed bump. It may have worked better as a stand alone film because here it just killed the mood. I was also not as enthralled by Vision Stains as other reviewers have seemed to be. It certainly had an original story but it ended disappointingly and I just couldn't get myself into it. Sweets seemed to be something of a sort of surreal metaphor that addressed many different issues in a roundabout way, as well as keeping up with the general mood of the rest of the film despite the higher level of intellectualism. I did enjoy it, although I found some of it a bit silly and think it lacked full cohesiveness. Overall Theatre Bizarre is probably one of the better horror anthologies I've seen in a long time. According to my individual ratings it just barely averages out to a 6 but I feel like overall it was probably a solid 6, maybe even a 7.
Aptly named anthology The Theatre Bizarre delivers a mixed bag of horrifying goodies.A young woman is walks into a seemingly abandoned Theater, where she's soon welcomed by a marionette version of cult legend Udo Kier and numerous other grisly dummies who present a number of nightmarish stories. "The Accident was the most visually appealing. "I Love You" was the best for me, and "Wet Dreams" kept me watching. "Vision Stains" was one of the most interesting. "Mother of Toads" was my least favorite and "Sweets" the most outlandish of the bunch. Overall I do like an anthology and The Theatre Bizarre isn't the worst, but it certainly isn't the best. With its title it was as good as to be expected. Worth a watch on a boring night in.
The wraparound segments are truly bizarre, but there is a subtle progression within them - see if you can spot it before it's too late. "Mother Of Toads" is atmospheric but muddled. "I Love You" is disturbing but brilliant, with two strong performances by its leads. "Wet Dreams" is a cheap, gory mishmash. "The Accident" is elegiac and beautifully done, but feels incomplete. "Vision Stains" is squalid, ugly, and for strong stomachs only. "Sweets" is an one-joke tale that takes too long to get to the punchline. On the whole this is an uneven anthology, but don't miss "I Love You" if you like horror for and about adults - a rare thing indeed. **1/2 out of 4.
I admit that while I heard quite a few good things about this movie I held off on it because I typically do not like anthologies but this one was pretty good and original. I will speak on the ones that stood out to me.The Mother of Toads was OK but nothing special. It involves a couple and a witch. I wont say much more but honestly I thought this movie would be a let down after they started with this. 6/10I Love You was actually pretty interesting and had a nice story. You do feel for the guy if you have been in a similar position but it goes a little crazy in the end. 7/10Wet Dreams Has Tom Savini directing so the effects are top notch and probably the best of any of the films. I did like the story and this was my second favorite on this film. Just a little side note, you will either love it or hate it so I understand the reviews not liking this one.8/10The next three are decent except for sweets which I hated. Vision Stains and The Accident are good however and I have to admit that this anthology surprised me in a good way. Also The Accident is my favorite and the story is amazing. Not a lot of gore or creepiness but I found it to be a great short. The Wrap Around story is probably the best wrap around story of any Anthology that comes to my memory. While the twist wasn't to surprising, it was still a great idea. Opens a lot of doors if the franchise gets revisited. Still though some of the stories are weak IMO and it is definitely not for everyone, even some horror fans will not like it. I give it a 7 outta 10.
