A different way of telling a story
It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.
This film gets off to a somewhat uncertain start, but is rewarding enough if you stick with it - just keep your hopes and expectations low.It is essentially a teen rom-com, with that way overused device of the narration-that's-aware-it's-a-narration, which runs consistently throughout. The film also begins on a sombre note - suicidal depression - which is one of the principle themes of the piece, despite never being adequately explored beyond its shallow convenience as a device for facilitating a meet-cute.The main setting is a psych ward, populated by thinly-drawn caricatures of mental patients, complete with all the standard two-dimensional clichés of appearance and behaviour. But this film is decidedly not "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". The nut-house environment and suicidal central character merely provide the set-up for a bog-standard teenage angst-fest with a conveniently attractive - and willing - girl next door. (But she self-harms, and has three pretty little scars to justify her presence on the ward).Once it finally makes up its mind to be a rom-com rather than a treatise on mental healthcare, the film picks up its pace and its mood, and even includes a delightfully silly and unexpected musical number. There are some nice performances, and a couple of genuinely touching moments, but despite a feel-good finale it is not a film I'd rush to watch again.
ah ! i am in pain after trying to watch this movie to the end but i could not . i am suffering . this is one of the dumbest movie of all time . i tried hard but could not finish watching it . i cant even describe the stupidity of this movie . how could they include this garbage in COMEDY genre , there should be a new genre TORTURE OF AUDIENCE for movies like this . watch the ceiling fan and you will get more entertainment than this movie.
What did I just have to skip through to just get to the end and find out what happens? There are many problems with this whatever-shite-is, but the main issue is that it downplays mental illness and not only turns into a joke, it romanticizes it. It actually tries to make mental illness hip and trendy.Depression and other types of mental illness are very serious. Mental hospitals are also very serious. They're not little "vacations" as the vapid main character puts it. Serious depression isn't just something you "feel sometimes" as the main character's self-absorbed best friend puts it. Taking medication isn't cool as the other self-absorbed friend tries to imply. What is wrong with the people who made this junk?! And it's unrealistic from the get-go. What mental hospital admits an underage kid without his parents' consent? Where does that exist? Then it just lets mental patients stroll in and out of the ward? RUN??? One of the things one learns when one goes to a psych ward is: DON'T RUN.GARBAGE.And the color palette? Everything has to be muted neutrals or some pretentious crap? Get over yourselves. This "movie" needs to be burned.
This film is one of those lovely ones that quietly sneak up on you and by the time you finish it you know that you'll watch it time and time again.Based on a book that has become a bible for teens going through hard times this film captures the messages of it perfectly, and a strong cast bring it to life. There is so much warmth and charm here. Never does the film get too dark, or too funny, never does it say that mental health issues are ever going to be easy to break free from. It's an honest film, and that's why I like it.Yes, it's a quiet film. It's never going to be one that people in fifty years are talking about. But it's certainly one I recommend you seek out and watch.
