The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.
if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
I enjoy movies where it takes a while to figure out what is going on. I thought this was one of those movies so I was enjoying the tease and the wonder of what was happening. In the end they explain nothing. I'd give it 2 stars for plot and writing but I bump it to 5 stars for the interesting visuals.
Quite simply, this movie is extremely slow, has almost no dialogue, and no real conclusion... Perhaps if I could force myself to watch this movie over and over and over, I MIGHT be able to figure out what the real point of the movie is.From the movie description you know that the main character is an alien (played by Scarlett Johansen) who lures men into a mysterious black liquid.... That's pretty much the entire movie...
I've watched scores of Scandinavian films where there is nothing more than silence and people going about their business, and all in one continuous, still shot. I actually enjoyed many of those films. However, there is no concept built by the multitude of scenes which have no dialogue or "action" in them. This left me constantly asking myself questions that I shouldn't have to ask if I'm paying attention (and I was); questions such as, "Why is she doing what she's doing?", "What is the purpose of what she is doing?" and "How does any of this serve the loose plot?". By the time the credits rolled, I was left feeling like I'd watched a nearly two-hour-long intro to what could've been an excellent film. While it's not one- and two-star trash that so many morons rated it, on the other hand, it leaves a lot (and I do mean a lot) to be desired. Great cinematography, very good soundtrack and sound production, and great overall production quality, but in the end, it just wasn't entertaining.
That is how long it took me to turn this movie off. Not a single word muttered in the first fifteen minutes. I was wondering when Charlie Chaplan was going to appear or maybe a Groucho cameo. Extremely boring movie and you need subtitles even though they speak English.
