Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
Mathayus' father is the leader of the elite Black Scorpions but he refuses to let Mathayus enlist. Layla as a girl is also rejected. Sargon (Randy Couture) uses black magic to kill Mathayus' father and later becomes the king of Akkad. He allows Mathayus to join the Scorpions. When he orders Mathayus to kill a friend who slandered him, Mathayus revolts. With the help of Layla and others, he sets off for Egypt to steal the Spear of Osiris. The Spear is only the first step as they steal the Sword of Damocles from Astarte. The original Scorpion King has many problems but it does have the Rock. His obvious charisma saves that movie from being what this movie turns out to be. This has a lot of weak acting from no-name actors, weak CGI, weak writing, and Randy Couture as the villain. Couture is no Rock. He is acting as one expects from an untrained actor. This is inferior in almost every respect.
Normally I like to watch movies with an history like the mummy, clash of the titans, etc... But this was very hard to watch... and I've to admin this is a very bad movie...Why? First of all, the most important thing, the story: very poor storyline and script. End is so predictable...Secondly, the acting, awful acting, the actors don't take their role seriously, the don't live in their role. acting has no depth. No emotion at all...Effects, just amateuristic, not credible. Looks very cheap. Fighting scenes are not even better, poor choreography...
I'm a little surprised at the many one-star reviews for this film. My son (age 11) and I watched it one day when he was home sick, and we found it perfectly good entertainment. The acting was fine, the effects were decent, and there was a coherent story. That's a LOT more than I can say for other straight-to-video movies that we've watched, including 2012: Supernova and others of that ilk. Of course we noticed right away that The Rock was not involved, so perhaps we adjusted our expectations accordingly, and therefore were not as disappointed as other users on this site. Of course it's derivative of other mythologies, but that's not really a bad thing, when you're looking for an escapist 2 hours. As a side note, I enjoyed the main female character, who is pretty, but also strong and feisty - so often I almost grind my teeth down to nubs at the offensive way that women are portrayed in action movies - stupid, helpless, and clearly only there so the camera can linger on their cleavage and other, er, assets.
Someone in Hollywood got bored and said to themselves, "I think I'll make another D-grade sequel to another film that hasn't had a sequel yet, because every film needs a sequel." Thus, Scorpion King 2 was born. I rank this right up there with "War of the Worlds 2" and "Highlander 2". I think I've had enough of Hollywood's assembly-line mentality. Good movies can't be manufactured; they need to be created. It seems everything is made of cardboard these days, and mediocrity is King. While you're at it, how about making "Titanic 2", "Driving Miss Daisy 2", and "Saving Private Ryan 2", because every movie needs a cheap sequel. I just can't wait!
