Wow! Such a good movie.
A Masterpiece!
A lot more amusing than I thought it would be.
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
I give it extra points for the extended fight scene at the end. Those guys really beat the crap out of each other!
Vampires that impregnate human chicks... an idea that makes no sense, but suspend your belief for a bit and you might be entertained, son. In this flick, a vampire kills a dude and then rapes a chick... but the chick gets totally pregnant and gives birth to a hybrid (like Blade or Alucard or something). And then, you know, the hybrid makes his intentions of killing the daddy clear. This film has one big failure: it was filmed with just about the lowest quality humanly possible. Very grainy footage and sound and whatnot, so until you learn to ignore it, you'll be forcing yourself against your will. I mean, it's not as cruddy as "House of Death" (aka "Death Screams")... but what is? So, yeah, there's the raping and killing vampire against his own son. The interesting twist, if that's not enough, is that from the very beginning, one of the wise and level-headed cops suspects a vampire to be responsible for the violence. Immediately after the attack on the woman, he shows her a photo of the dead man (or, undead man) and she recoils in terror. What makes him think a vampire is involved? You have to watch to see. Now, there's hope of this some day getting cleaned up and appreciated by a new generation of horror fans who want to scour the obscure titles from yesteryear. Mill Creek offers a DVD that is a poor transfer, but Unicorn video had the VHS rights... with Unicorn gone and the rights gone public, who knows where the original print is? I certainly don't. But I think with a little work, and plenty of luck, some company (Dark Sky?) will come along and snatch up the Unicorn properties and save them from obscurity like they did with "She Beast".
Now, when a body is found and a police lieutenant (Eric Mason) asks if the sun was completely up, you know there are going to be problems. The police do not automatically assume vampires. But, this one did.Leslie (Kitty Vallacher) was doing the nasty with her boyfriend (Jay Scott) in a cemetery when Caleb Croft (Michael Pataki) rises from the grave. The boyfriend is killed, and she is raped. An interesting twist on the vampire theme.30 years later the child (William Smith) is tracking down his father who has lost the ugliness of the grave and is busy raping and sucking the blood from young women. The movie is slow and there is no blood or nudity. I would have never watched had I noticed the PG rating. PG for a vampire movie. Lame!
"A vampire rises from his grave and, after coming across a young couple, kills the man and rapes the woman. The woman eventually gives birth to a part-human, part-vampire child that feeds upon her blood that she provides to him. Years later, the now adult human-vampire hybrid son sets out to track down his vampire father, seeking revenge for the curse he bestowed upon him," according to the DVD sleeve's synopsis. Some good ideas, undoubtedly from screenplay writer David Chase's vampire book "The Still Life" - but, this "Grave of the Vampire" is unfortunately dug very poorly. And, even what's good herein could be improved upon; for example, by having the opening couple bear clear responsibility for disturbing the vampire's tomb. Still, the basic story is ripe for reproduction; it might even make an interesting TV series. Vampires are in vogue. The film gets off to a good start with Michael Pataki (as Caleb Croft) sinking his teeth into the role; and, doesn't it does make sense for the vampire to feel aroused after consuming a "Bloody Mary"? Another memorable sequence has victim Kitty Vallacher (as Leslie Hollander) learning how to feed her baby vampire, who grows up to be William Smith (as James Eastman). The characters obviously had so much more potential.**** Grave of the Vampire (1/74) John Hayes ~ Michael Pataki, William Smith, Kitty Vallacher
