If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
The story-telling is good with flashbacks. The film is both funny and heartbreaking. You smile in a scene and get a soulcrushing revelation in the next.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
I was a teen in 1961's Hawaii... this story closely follows much of what I experienced there, and I must say that the picture follows reality in an astounding way. Much of the footage even made ME look twice. The social groups, the standards, the ethics, the customs... were all exceptional. Granted, the waves of the "big storm" were exaggerated, but for an overall flavor of teen Hawaii at THAT time, this is an excellent film.
