In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.
One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
Live from Philadelphia, PAAttendance 19,304Your commentators are Vince McMahon & "Rowdy" Roddy PiperThe Rockers Vs Power & GloryHeh. Plenty of boos for The Rockers. That's Philly for ya. Power and Glory win. Marty spent most of the match in the ring because Shawn was selling a knee injury. Pretty fun stuff overall.**1/2 out of 5Intercontinental TitleMr. Perfect (C) Vs "The Texas Tornado" Kerry Von ErichKerry basically squashes Hennig to win the title. I've always found this to be rather shocking booking. Huge fan of Kerry's...but it was kinda harmful to Hennig...and Von Erich's push didn't last long anyway.*1/2 out of 5Sensational Queen Sherri Vs Sweet SapphireSapphire doesn't show up...so Sherri wins by forfeitTito Santana Vs The WarlordUgh...poor Tito. One of my favorite workers...and he has to job to this buffoon...all because of Vince's fetish for big men. The Warlord wins (obviously) Tolerable, thanks to Tito.** out of 5Tag Team Titles (2 out of 3 Falls)Demolition (C) (Smash & Crush) Vs The Hart FoundationAxe was battling legit heart problems...so they brought in Crush. They turned Demolition heel in hasty fashion because The Road Warriors came to the WWF. Couldn't have two similar gimmicks in the same promotion. The Hart Foundation wins 2 falls to 1. Demolition won the first one, Hart Foundation won the next two. Axe came out...but The Hart Foundation prevailed, thanks to help from LOD. FANTASTIC! Easily one of my favorite tag matches of all time.**** out of 5A plethora of interviews take place after. Jake wins by DDT. Bossman saves Roberts from an attack after. Pretty mediocre match...but the crowd liked it.*1/2 out of 5Sgt. Slaughter gives Brother Love "The Great American" award. Volkoff was miscast as a face big time.*1/4 out of 5"Macho Man" Randy Savage Vs Dusty RhodesSapphire turns heel on Dusty and joins Ted Dibiase. Savage wins the match with help from Sherri. Dusty was used horribly in the WWF and many think Vince hired him out of pure spite for being one of NWA/WCW's biggest starts. Sapphire was on her way out of the WWF at this juncture.* out of 5Hulk Hogan Vs EarthquakeHogan wins by countout. This was godawful. The crowd went bonkers for Hogan. His ovation was ridiculous and the crowd loved it...but I hated it. Earthquake just wasn't a viable main eventer.* out of 5WWF Championship (Steel Cage Match)Ultimate Warrior (C) Vs "Ravishing" Rick RudeWarrior wins. Decent cage match...if a little short. The crowd was burnt out at this point and didn't seem to be into it that much. They weren't quiet or anything...but they were most certainly tired. **1/2 out of 5A mixed bag overall. Certainly had its moments...but it's inconsistent. It's well worth a watch though.6/10
Roddy Piper joined Vince McMahon to comment this standout SummerSlam event of the good old days of WWF action. Power $ Glory took it to the original Rockers in a sneak attack before the bell. Watch for the final, wild moments of the Hulk Hogan-Earthquake revenge bout. Big Bossman was in Hulster's corner. He rushes the ring with a chair as Hogan is held up in a vicious choke hold-the, one, two shots to the 5-foot wide back of Earthquake (John Tenta)! Piper screams in disbelief to Mr. McMahon: "Did you see the welts on his back from that chair!" A steel cage main event title match follows with the late Rick Rude challenging his toughest opponent then WWF champion The Ultimate Warrior.
First ever event i watched thought it was real looking back its still a fantastic event the first match was excellent a real underdog fight with a realistic ending Perfect losing was a waste of one of the best characters ever he should of kept the title for a long time Warlord could have fought barbarian in a tag match with heenan and slick. The harts match could be the greatest tag match I've ever seen. i cannot understand why l.o.d where not used and even though hogan earthquake was good everyone wanted a hogan warrior rematch. Why bother wasting peoples time with bad news vs jake it was terrible and what has poor tito done to vince to be jobbed every two minutes
This one has always been a sentimental favorite of mine. I won a VHS copy of it in a newspaper competition about 8 years ago, and I still watch it today, it's great fun. It's like a peek into another world-Hulk Hogan and the Ultimate Warrior are on top of the WWF, and probably two of their more interesting , if not brilliant, outings are here. Vince McMahon and Roddy Piper are hamming it up on commentary, and virtually everything that was great about wrestling between 1988-92 is here-a great Hart Foundation bout, prime Curt Hennig stuff, The Rockers, the underrated Brother Love sketches and plenty more. Not totally great, but really fun stuff all round.
