Absolutely Fantastic
It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
The tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
Sure, it won't win any prizes for technical achievement or (especially) acting, but it is what it is: lively female-empowerment action entertainment for the drive-in crowd. If you watch this for the stars involved, be warned that some of them were hired basically just for their name value. Still, cult director Greydon Clark ("Without Warning", "Joysticks") keeps this silly diversion racing forward. Some viewers may know this flick for its being lampooned on 'Mystery Science Theater 3000', but the fact of the matter is that this was obviously meant to be played for laughs to begin with.Playboy Playmate Susan Kiger plays Michelle Wilson, a successful singer whose kid brother is beaten up by "Sticks" (Clark regular Darby Hinton), a drug pusher. It takes Michelle no time to take a schoolteacher, April Thomas (the directors' wife, Jacqueline Cole), up on her offer to assist in destroying a processing plant used by dealers. Soon April and Michelle are recruiting other young women, including a stunt driver, Terry Grant (Sylvia Anderson), a martial artist, Kako Umaro (Lieu Chinh), a policewoman, Elaine Brenner (Robin Greer), and a model, Maria (Noela Velasco) to join in the fight against drug trafficking. Meanwhile, a student, Trish (Liza Greer), tries to tag along, wanting to be in on the action. The ladies are lovely and fun to watch, no matter how seriously they may be lacking in acting ability. The veterans & guest stars are likewise thoroughly entertaining, including Jack Palance as a goon and Peter Lawford as the drug kingpin, Jim Backus as a member of a right wing militia, Neville Brand as Elaines' boss, Pat Buttram as a van salesman, and Alan Hale Jr. as Michelles' agent. Legendary TV & radio host Arthur Godfrey appears fleetingly as himself. Palances' son Cody has a small role as a young thug. The movie is often uproariously silly, complete with goofy comedy bits like the one with Backus, and cartoon-like sound effects. The scene transitions are particularly amusing. And there's enough gunfire, explosions, and stunts going on to ensure that things never get boring.Just go into this thing not expecting anything remotely resembling high art, be prepared not to exercise your brain too much, and get ready to laugh, and one *can* actually enjoy this.Eight out of 10.
When I write one of these things, I generally try to sound reasonably intelligent. I try to do more than write "It SUX" or "Best Movie I've Ever Seen". I honestly try to put a little more thought into it than that. But with Angel's Revenge (or Angels' Brigade which I actually prefer), I'm at a loss. Angel's Revenge has to be one of the stupidest movies I've ever seen. No deep insightful stuff here just stupid! At every opportunity, the movie completely insulted my intelligence. Want an example? The mere fact that this group of women in matching white jumpsuits could sneak into a heavily guarded compound with their feathered hair and jiggling breasts and successfully disarm the bad guys with their lame attempts at martial arts and blow-up the place would insult the intelligence of anyone with an IQ above that of pond scum. With that being said, it's hard to admit that I actually enjoyed much of Angel's Revenge. Regardless of how bad it was, I was inexplicably entertained. There's just something about mindless 70s junk that I can't resists. I can't bring myself to rate it any lower than a 4/10.Angel's Revenge is yet another MST3K viewing for me. I've always thought that MST3K did some of their best work with movies like this (include Mitchell and San Francisco International in that mix). The riffs are often laugh-out-loud funny. On my MST3K rating scale, I give this episode a 4/5 an episode worth seeking out. Finally, I've seen Angel's Revenge compared with Charlie's Angels in a number of reviews. While Charlie's Angels may have "inspired" the making of Angel's Revenge, the comparison should end there. Kate, Jaclyn, and Farrah come across as thespians when compared with this group of women!
I recently realized that I miss Mystery Science Theater 3000, a show where a guy and two robots watch bad movies. I realized that I had either tossed or thrown out all my episodes years ago. Fortunantly, I found a tape and this one was on it. The movie is about a school teacher who enlists the help of a group of crime fighters with some support from a Las Vegas pop star to blow a drug lab. That's it. With Mike and the Bots fun as had by all. Even through the opening and closing credits. The move is incredibly bad with stale acting and Jack Palance who plays the drug ring middle management guy who has to help the idiot drug pusher employees like Sticks. Sticks is an idiot who get captured by the chicks. The 'seven' first have to get an armored car from Mr. Haney (from Green Achers) and steal weapons from Thirston Howell the third, who is leader of a right-wing militia group. Even though only is it an embarrasing role for Jim backus, his uniform is better than most real militia members. Add in Alan Hale Jr as the singers manager and a song called 'Shine Your Love' and it tops off this horrendous film. Oh, Peter Lawford is the drinking drug kingpin who dies in a pool. Crow (from MST3k) adds his comment:"By this time my lungs were aching for booze." as Lawford lies dead in a pool.Angel's Revenge (as it was called on MST3K) is a incredibly bad movie. The MSTIE crew really had funny comments through out the film. It's really one of their best in my opinion. My best review of the actual film can be summed up by Mike Nelson when he said of the film: "Oh, this is offending one-celled animals" It was great to see all the seventies references for them to riff on. So only see this film with MST3k. It's Hilarious.
Now you know where all those actors who are at the end of their ropes end up! How absolutely degrading to be "starring" in this kind of dreck and still be able to go on living! Don't these people have any pride? The makers of this film really had to dig to come up with Arthur Godfrey......probably about 6 feet down! This is the final resting place for people like Alan Hale, Pat Buttram, and Jim Backus. Remember when they gave us some joy on television and movies? And poor drugged out, drunken Peter Lawford.....it's quite a comedown from the Rat Pack and the Kennedys. At least you expect Jack Palance to do stupid things. There is probably nothing worse than the public humiliation that must go with being in this level of film. And who the hell are these copy-cat Charlie's Angels who have no talent except some pretty hot bods? It's all so amateurish and will cause you terrible pain and suffering, accompanied by nausea and fever. Stay away, run away, it's terminally bad!!!
