I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.

Commentators: Bob Caudle & Gordon SolieThe Assassins (W/Paul Jones) Vs Rufus R. Jones & Bugsy McGrawThe Assassins win. Well, this was very oldschool. Not much happened but arm drags, backdrops, headbutts, and other rudimentary stuff. If you like basic wrestling, I suppose you'll enjoy this. Bugsy McGraw was fun.*1/2 out of 5Johnny Weaver & Scott McGhee Vs Kevin Sullivan & Mark LewinSullivan and Lewin win. Afterwards, Gary Hart takes something out of his boot. Lewin grabs it and lacerated McGhee severely with it. Angelo Mosca (Who had just left the WWWF at this point) runs in to try to make the save. Mosca rebounds and chases everyone away, while McGhee is left a bloody mess. Well, it was better than the opening match, that's for sure. I like the post-match angle as well.**1/4 out of 5Abdullah The Butcher Vs Carlos ColonButcher wins, thanks to interference by Hugo Savinovich. This one was technically fine, just lacking in excitement. Of course, The Butcher bleeds in the match, what else is new? Why else do you think he has those scars on his head?*3/4 out of 5Angelo Mosca cuts an awesome promo backstage. McGhee is a bloody mess. Wahoo McDaniel & Mark Youngblood Vs 'Cowboy' Bob Orton & Dick SlaterOrton and Slater win after Youngblood gets pinned with a superplex by Orton. McDaniel gets his arm injured after the match. This was a great tag team match. It was pretty exciting. Youngblood played the face in peril perfectly and it just moved at a consistent pace. I enjoyed this one a lot.***1/2 out of 5They have trouble interviewing Dusty Rhodes because the sound is acting weird. Suits me just fine. With all due respect to Dusty, he was never my cup of tea. Always respected the man, he was just never a favorite.Television Title (Hair Vs Mask)The Great Kabuki (C) (W/Gary Hart) Vs Charlie BrownCharlie wins with a simple elbow drop. That's the beauty of wrestling in the old days. Any move was a threat to win the match. The match was pretty boring. Once again, too many rudimentary moves.*1/2 out of 5United States Championship (Dog Collar Match)Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine (C) Vs 'Rowdy' Roddy PiperPiper wins the title. Wow! Despite the anti-climatic ending, this was a BRUTAL, nasty, hard-hitting brawl. This is hardcore stuff that made me cringe at times. Piper's ear got busted at one point. At first viewing, I was unimpressed. I watched it when I was in a rotten mood, which didn't help. This definitely lives up to the hype. Thankful for second viewings. ****1/4 out of 5Tag Team Titles (Guest Ref, Angelo Mosca)The Brisco Brothers (C) Vs Ricky Steamboat & Jay YoungbloodSteamboat and Youngblood win the titles. This was a solid match from top to bottom. It was well-paced and fairly exciting. I wouldn't call it mind-blowing, though. I've seen them have better on an episode of Mid-Atlantic Wrestling. Good match, though.*** out of 5World Heavyweight Title (Steel Cage Match)Harley Race (C) Vs Ric FlairFlair wins the title with a very sloppy flying cross body. Aside from the sloppy ending, this is one hell of a cage match. Don't expect anything too fancy. It was just two guys busting their asses and giving you something to remember. Beautiful storytelling all the way. ****1/2 out of 5I really have to give this PPV it's due. It's basically the first Wrestlemania for WCW/NWA, only much better than the first Wrestlemania. It has some classic matches and much more good than bad. Fans these days will be bored to tears. It's admittedly a little slow in spots, but it has some amazing stuff. Piper/Valentine & Flair/Race are true classics that need to be watched at least once. Any true wrestling fan must see this.8.5/10

Starrcade '83 was the original grandaddy of pro-wrestling "supercards" and the inspiration for the annual WWF/WWE Wrestlemania extravaganzas that began two years later. The NWA - a loose federation of smaller promotions (or territories) - was, at that time, the biggest organisation in wrestling and the NWA world title was the most prestigious title in the sport. Harley Race was The Man and his challenger on this Thanksgiving night was a young, cocky upstart called Ric Flair. Their months-long feud came to an end in a steel cage on this unforgettable evening.Get your hands on the video if you can 'cos the rest of the card was just as entertaining, especially the dog collar match pitting an in-his-prime Roddy Piper (as a babyface good guy) versus Greg Valentine.
