Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.
It doesn't really deserve an eight but it sure as heck is better than a freaking three. I found this at Goodwill and have been curious about the film so I snatched it up. I enjoyed it. It moves a bit slowly at times, Traci Lords isn't really right to play a teenage princess, and its not a lot like the novel but who cares. Lords does bring some decent name recognition to the cast. Taken on its own merits this movie is entertaining and pretty surreal in some ways. Visually it consistently makes good eye candy. Asylum sank a bit more money into this one I suspect. I actually enjoy Asylum movies, they are simply fun, and this is one of their better ones IMO. It reminded me somewhat of the old serials from the thirties like Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. However, there are lots of other influences. I felt it came up a bit short in the action department but I may be a bit spoiled by big budget films where something is blown up, wrecked or shot, every few seconds. The male lead was pretty good and the Tarks looked cool. Overall the sets were very nice for a medium budget flick. There is something oddly surreal about a lot of Asylum movies and that actually adds to their appeal. Im a fan of the old pulp fiction stuff so I gravitate to media like this. I wouldn't mind reading a novel based on this movie actually. Give it a shot, its pretty entertaining in a low key kind of way. No its not Star Wars but it is pretty unique in lots of ways. Watch it for something different than the formulaic stuff Hollywood generally puts out there.
It never ceases to amaze me that SyFy can produce so many made-for-TV movies that are incredibly bad. Sometimes it's budget, sometimes it's actors, sometimes it's directors, sometimes it's editing. In this case: all of the above.Traci Lords may have been a porno superstar, but she should have stayed there; in this film, she proves once and for all that she's no actress. Antonio looks good, but is even worse as an actor than Brendan Fraser, "the lantern-jawed oaf."Anyone who's read Burroughs knows that Tharks have four arms, and stand consieerably taller than humans. Hopefully, the new "John Carter" film will get it right; a combination of live action and CG is what's needed here. Make-up and special effects in this one weren't completely bad, but won't win any awards, either. The plot remains oddly disjointed, and this isn't helped by the confusing direction.A great story from a great writer, this one had potential but threw it all away. Not worth nine cents, much less nine bucks.
The film without the plot is just awful, effects to laugh at, fights that you are expecting to see in amateur night, and actors that defy any form of acting.... But to use a perfect book, such as Princess of Mars for that petty excuse of a movie... That will probably make the bones of Edgar Rice Burroughs rattle in his grave... I'm very disappointed to see his work twisted this way... The whole idea was to bring the book up-to-date i suppose, by making John Carter (the hero) a soldier (sniper) that is participating in an experiment of quantum de-materialization, in order to re-materialize in a different planet (Mars). The experiment is a success and after that he encounters numerous terrors, and I mean to use the word literally - such make up effects and costumes are terror to sci-fi enthusiasts - till he meets his partner on screen, the Princess (now that's something entirely different - what where they thinking when they cast the role of a princess to Tracy???) Anyway, I guess it's a good movie to see if you're waiting for a dentist appointment, surely will numb the pain if you manage to see the whole film!!!
Watching this film one is certain that everything is possible. Indeed if we must admit that the impossible is beyond this movie. How is it possible to find money for something so bad? It is a true miracle and we must admit that everything is possible. Unless the very bad "actor Antonio Sabato Jr. as father a mobster. Or an uncle in the Mafia wishing to launder money. This "film" is a complete idiocy. Bad script. Bad history. Bad music. Bad special effects. Bad costumes. Bad decor. Bad actors / actresses. Etc.. Too bad we could not see the breasts of "Traci Lords" or his ass or sex. It would have been interesting to know if his advanced age, she shaved her sex. It should be like Antonio Sabato Jr. has everything to be porn actor .... Traci Lords should never have let go the only thing she is able to do: porn. Open his mouth to make pipes is one thing, open to interpret something interesting is another. If you want to see Traci Lords, it is better to see in the "movies" as follows: The Sex Godness Kinky Business Lust In The Fast Lane Bad Girls III Sex Shoot Etc..
