A Disappointing Continuation
If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.
Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.
Hell yeah! That's pretty much the feeling the average person will have throughout this compact and action-filled piece of garbage. It's an incredibly crazy, riveting and somewhat moronic 75 minutes, it's the kind of project that defines what B-list horror should be all about. The hilarious (in a sadistic way) opening immediately drags you in, and the movie just utterly refuses to let you go after that. Demonic zombie nuns, fluorescent(!) blood, hot chicks, washed-up gangsta rapper Coolio playing a cop, I thank God for showing me all this pure uncut greatness. If all this stuff can't get your attention, I really don't know what will. The Adrienne Barbeau appearance is just icing on the cake, brilliant role. Of course this movie isn't particularly well-made or well-written, but I stopped caring roughly ten seconds in. Loads of fun.
Who would have thought a movie with Coolio in the cast, would get a ten rating from me? Actually Pterodactyl was pretty fun as well, maybe he's making a comeback LOL. Seriously, hopefully not. Anyways onto my review, this film delivers with a solid cast, funny script, and a kick butt heroine performance from Scream Queen Icon Adrienne Barbeau. The scene of young Adrienne shooting up the demon nuns, was priceless. The gore was all there, and got past by the censors being that the demons bleed green slime, way to stick it to the MPAA Mr. Mendez. And by the way the gay satanist, needs to be cast in more genre films, he was hilarious in this. All in all good horror fun, and if you enjoy this, I recommend the Night Of The Demons Trilogy, The Hazing, Soulkeeper, and Dead Hate The Living, which are all fun tongue in cheek horror films like this.
Despite the bad reviews I decided to pick this movie up and it was interesting to say the least. Where it can't be deemed a "true horror movie" because of comic lines and acting (sometimes not intended I'm sure), this movie still has some merit. Acting and character depth are not its strong virtues and the special effects could never win any awards for sure. Coolio's role in the movie was funny and it was good to see Bill Moseley for once not hiding behind a ton of makeup. Adrienne Barbeau's character is over the top and drags the movie down somewhat. David Gunn's character will have you laughing as will Richard Trapp's character. The story idea is different and gets your attention. Instead of switching from horror film to horror/comedy throughout the movie, the movie would have been better served to be played out as a straight laced hard edged horror flick from start to finish. Despite its many flaws the movie is still worth picking up and watching. Just don't put your expectations too high.
The film opens in 1960 with a schoolgirl named Christine shooting up and torching a convent. We then jump forward 40 years to a bunch of high school kids deciding to go to the now deserted and condemned building for some sex and drugs and to see if the place really is haunted.Comic relief is soon provided by a hopelessly inept coven of Satanists.Unfortunately the cursed basilica is a dangerous place filled with bloodthirsty zombie nuns."The Convent" is a fun little horror film with plenty of gore and explosive climax. The characters are stereotypes and the film actually reminded me "Night of the Demons".Still the action is fast-paced and there are some scenes that managed to make me jump.Give it a chance.8 out of 10.
