The Age of Commercialism
One of my all time favorites.
A movie that not only functions as a solid scarefest but a razor-sharp satire.
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
Stop me if you've heard this one before: Vicious killer Harmon Porter (a blah portrayal by Dominic Purcell, who brings zero intensity or fearsome presence to his part) escapes from an asylum on your proverbial dark'n'stormy night (my, isn't that original ... NOT!!!) so he can go after pretty young psychology student Abby Jones (a solid and appealing performance by Christine Evangelista). Writer/director Campion Murphy totally fumbles the ball with the straight-down-the-line generic and predictable premise: The story plods along at an excruciatingly sluggish pace, the suspense and spooky atmosphere are both conspicuous by their alarming complete absence, the spare music fails to generate any much-needed zing, there's an appalling lack of logic (for example, how exactly does Porter figure out where Abby lives?), and the whole thing limps along to a frustrating and dissatisfying nonconclusion. Worse yet, Abby's two coed friends are a couple of irritating and unlikable bickering bimbos, the useless cops just stand around and do nothing, and, to add further egregious insult to already abject injury, we don't even get any decent gore or gratuitous nudity to alleviate the mind-numbing tedium. The big problem with this blandly done dud is that it not only brings absolutely nothing new to the table, but also it suffers from a crippling paucity of any essential energy and urgency. A real clunker.
My family really enjoyed watching. Loved the subtle nuances and jumpy scenes. The mossy, swampy, steamy scenes are reminiscent of Hitchcock-style dark and twisty. We liked that a viewer can leave so much to the imagination like curling up on a dark and stormy night with a good book-just don't watch it all alone! And watch it more than once if you want to really capture its essence....the mental patient's obsession with a pretty student sets the tone for his murderous expedition and a certain rivalry later exposed explains much about what is happening in this small college town where the co-eds share a rental house not too far from a psych hospital. Protective instincts made us want to tell the girls to run, not look in the closet, don't stay home alone, all things we usually envision we would not do if trapped in this situation....at any rate if you like thrillers, give this one a look.
Big fan of Dominic Purcell here. Was awesome in Prison Break. He doesn't disappoint in this horror/thriller either!!!An actress that caught my eye by her performance was the beautiful Christine Evangelista. Hot!!!As far as the action goes, it is a suspenseful Horror roller coaster ride. Not cheap fantasy horror but the kind that can happen in everyday life and is more scary because it's sooo REAL!!!!Everyone knows the gorgeous Faith Ford from Murphy Brown, Hope & Faith. Well she plays the part of the detective on the case and she delivers!! Try and catch it on Video On Demand like I did.You Won't B sorry, just scared witless..LOL
If you have not seen this movie, do yourself a favour.Stop reading these comments, get up, take a shower, then GO GET THIS MOVIE. Buy it, don't rent. You will not regret it. Escapee has one of the better scripts you'll find in the horror/thriller genre over the last decade. Just as good as his writing ,is Campion Murphy's direction, which is outstanding and reminiscent of a young Hitchock. His brilliance is in keeping the action flowing at a gripping, break neck speed leading up 2 a climax that leaves one shivering long after The End. I've rarely seen a better villain played by Dominic Purcell : He must have been channelling some evil entity; simply frightening.Aww and what can one say about the beautiful Faith Ford, 5 Time Emmy Nominated Actress.I only wish she could have been in every scene!! If Campion Murphy and Faith Ford's next project is as accomplished as "Escapee", count me in!!!!!!!!!
