Best movie ever!
If the ambition is to provide two hours of instantly forgettable, popcorn-munching escapism, it succeeds.
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
The movie is made so realistic it has a lot of that WoW feeling at the right moments and never tooo over the top. the suspense is done so well and the emotion is felt. Very well put together with the music and all.
This flick wasn't created to be compared to the best horror/suspense movies, but to entertain the audience - and it does!Low budget, a little cheesy, but definitely fun to watch. No political or social justice messages preached to the audience - a huge plus.
The cinematography in this movie is a breath of fresh air. Eerie sound design. Simple yet effective. The true horror is your own imagination in this movie. They give you just enough detail to get inside your head. The characters are well acted. You can almost imagine this as a theatrical adaptation with live performers and it would be just as effective. Some of the scenes this movie are nightmarish and bizarre in ways that are just a hair outside the realm of reality. You are the passenger on a road trip gone terribly off schedule. As if being in the middle of nowhere weren't spooky enough. This modern family have bigger problems than teenage rebellion. A full tank of gas will only get you so far on this never ending road to horror! I give this bag five buttery bags of popcorn. For an authentic and immersive experience try watching this film at night in the back seat of a car on a highway excursion. Take care in the passing lane and don't forget to wear your seat belt!
I originally wanted to give this movie a 5/10, but there are a few attributes that make this film unique enough to bump it up, For one thing, it has a more traditional acting style, such as long takes, and dynamic psychological turmoil that the characters display. It also displays an ambiguity that gives the viewer a chance to think and interpret the film.Quoting someone on the forums, this film definitely feels inspired by David Lynch in both good and bad ways. There was a lot wrong with this film though, in my opinion. There is repetition, predictability and nothing 'spectacular' about it **outside** of Ray Wise who definitely anchors this film - that man is brilliant.
This is an excellent scary movie, with twists, scares, and fun. What else can you wish for? Well, there are some parts that are weak to me. Things that anyone of us, presented with the same situation, would do differently. Things that simply "don't fly". And that's why this movie gets my 8 out of 10.However, if you are willing to get past these few "errors", you are in for a sweet ride, and by sweet I mean jumping out of your chair, laughing, and trying to figure out where the twist is while being surprised all the time. The characters are great, and all of them necessary in the plot. Because this movie is all about character development, and boy do they develop! As the movie progresses you will find that almost each character has a life of its own, and that only adds to the fun of watching this movie. If you love scary movies, you should be already watching this classic.
