Absolutely Fantastic
By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
Unseen, under-appreciated, and a Movie that defies explanation as to why it works so well because it shouldn't. It is a Fantasy/Western. How many of those have you seen? It takes a Twilight Zone type story and infuses it on a Modern Day Western Movie template and asks you to believe all this. You most likely will with gleeful abandon.Because it is so charming and produced so well that it all comes together with an ease of confidence that is enticing and wonderful. The scenery is beautiful, the Characters are likable, it moves along with twists and turns and it is like a Classic Children's Story that can be enjoyed by Adults as well. This is Family entertainment at its best. Never Corny, just thoughtful and it is an experience to behold. The Romance is playful, the Action is tough but not in a showy kind of Modern way. This is really a Fairy Tale. An adventure to one of those Lost Horizons of displaced people in a hidden land. Everything seems (sur)real here as two Cultures clash and just like in the Storybooks, everyone lives Happily Ever After......The End.
This movie had everything I could ever want - Tom Berenger, the Cheyenne continuing to live in peace without modern man's corruption, Barbara Hershey as a gentle caring anthropologist realizing her dream, a man and his dog, Wilfred Brimley's narration giving thoughtful insights, beautiful music, AMAZING scenery (did I mention Tom Berenger?), and the chance to dream again of the possibility of a real Shangri-La. Every time I watch it, this film leaves me with feelings of peace (from the outcome and their way of life), romance (the beautiful untainted love story between Lewis and Lillian), and the dream of someday traveling to the beautiful spot where it was filmed. Movies are meant to entertain, teach, and take us away from the rotten world we live in; this one fulfilled all of those requirements and should have been publicized much more, even nominated for best film, actor and supporting actor. Pity that none of that happened. As for me, I'll continue to watch it whenever I need to "escape" and view again that beautiful place where hopes and dreams come true.
I love this film. The stunning locations and acting performances were superb. I have been an admirer of Barbara Hershey since her days as one of 'the Munroes' and in this film she does not disappoint. I met Tom Berenger when he came to Belfast and he seemed to be as grumpy a character as the one he portrays in the film. We are very similar that way! I remember reading about a group of native Americans who were not discovered until 1910 in northern California. The idea of a lost tribe being discovered grabs the imagination. I knew something of the background of the Cheyenne tribe from reading 'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee' and this is related in the film. I have watched the DVD many times and never get tired of it. There are so few films I can say that about.
This is a movie that you will stop and watch every time it shows on TV: IF you have a true romantic spirit and love an outdoor action movie. The first sentence says it all, but let me say that the actors are well matched and the chemistry is great. I recently spent some time in Western Vancouver Island and was struck by the scenery and immediately thought of this movie and the beautiful backdrop in every scene. It is truly a beautiful movie.I am not a movie critic and as you probably can tell, this is my first, impromptu attempt to recommend a movie. It is a story about an itinerate cowboy and a secret that he stumbles across while tracking some runaway convicts. The story line has many facets that unfold as the cowboy becomes entangled in the secret that he uncovers.
