Sorry, this movie sucks
One of my all time favorites.
After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.
The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
"Mixed Nuts" is a remake of a French comedy that I'm sure is better, even though the cast here is fantastic: Steve Martin, Juliette Lewis, Adam Sandler, Madeline Kahn, Rita Wilson, Parker Posey, Liev Schreiber, Anthony LaPaglia, and Robert Klein. The producers certainly didn't scrimp on names. But they really should have sent the Nora and Delia Ephron script back for another rewrite. There are some very funny parts of this film, but it isn't quite the wacky comedy they were going for. Steve Martin as Philip runs a crisis hotline in Venice Beach, California. But the crisis at the office is bigger than what people are calling in about. The office is about to be evicted, which means that his two employees, Mrs. Munchnik (Kahn) and Catherine (Wilson) will be out of jobs. He can't bear to tell them. Plus, all three of them are miserable, especially Catherine, who thinks she will never find love. Meanwhile, someone calls and browbeats Philip into giving the office address, which is strictly forbidden. When the person shows, it's Liev Schreiber dressed as a woman.Ultimately the group meet Gracie and Felix (Lewis and LaPaglia), a pregnant couple with no money who are fighting. Their neighbor is Louis, a songwriter with a Tiny Tim-type voice. It's near Christmas, but no one feels very Christmas-like with a serial killer on the loose. Then Mrs. Munchnik comes up against an elevator, a fruitcake is passed back and forth and finally tossed, a gun goes off - - what's next?I might have been able to buy this as a TV movie if the cast hadn't been so prestigious. And as such, it might have made it. But I expected more from this group. It just doesn't hold together. The best part of the movie for me was Shreiber dancing with Martin and a couple of the late Kahn's big scenes.Disappointing. Most of these good people didn't have enough to do.
This film is funny and stupid! Ain't no such thing as too much Steve Martin, baby. Here Martin carries weak material, but it's a positive movie. This doesn't even qualify as "so bad it is good". This is merely "so bad it is bad". Still, I like all of the comedians here. There's something for everyone here. I love this movie, which is hilarious! Sounds corny? No matter what anyone says, this is utterly fantastic. I refuse to totally dismiss this, because I find it quite engaging, in a guilty pleasure sense. I thought this was cute and not bad. All of the fancy characters struggle against a system that has perpetuated falsehoods.
This is possibly Steve Martin's worst film. From the bad dye job (WHY?) to the bad acting to the bad writing to the poor direction to the crappy sets to the cheap costumes to the unfunny gags to the unsuccessful attempts at physical comedy to the sheer waste of great talent to the incredible, unbelievable, mind-blowing amount of sheer BOREDOM contained within, Mixed Nuts has it all. The jokes fall flat, the music is embarrassing and cartoonish, the characters are uninteresting...ugh, I'm bored even writing this review.I am stunned by how bad this was. It's nearly impossible to believe that the brains behind When Harry Met Sally directed this total failure of a movie. That was 90 minutes I will never get back.
I found many scenes that were funny. Steve Martin is good and most of the actors were funny. The pregnant woman Juliette Lewis was just to loud and nuts for me. Felix her boyfriend constantly doing the same thing fighting and running in his Santa suit, very repetitious. To me the premise was that this help line center was to help people with problems but, the people that were taking the calls really didn't care. It was a job. The nuts were funny. One of the scenes with the cross dressing man dancing with an uncomfortable Steve Martin was funny.I cannot find out who played this transsexual in the movie or what his name was. There is some swearing in it an a minor/medium sexual scene with Steve and the co-worker named Catherine in the bathroom. I felt uncomfortable in some parts and felt it disrespected Christmas.Gracie gives birth and they have her looking like Mary at the end with a veil on her head. I felt is was a satire and they were trying to replicate the birth of Jesus in this scene. It did mock my favorite holy day.
