Excellent, Without a doubt!!
It's an amazing and heartbreaking story.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.
I've been a fan of monster movies as long as I can remember, ever since watching Ray Harryhausen movies as a kid. Well, times have changed and CGI effects have replaced stop-motion Plasticine creatures, but are monster movies still any good? On the strength of SPIDERS, I'd say yes! From the first, you have to go into SPIDERS expecting a cheesy B-movie as this is exactly what you get. Don't look for any serious acting or a well-written plot as you won't find them in this genre. Instead, the film-makers focus on offering up a ton of monster action (on a limited budget, mind), quite a few laughs, and as many genre clichés as they can fit into the running time.Things kick off as a space shuttle crash-lands (really bad effect) and our trio of college student heroes (two nerds, one jock) investigate a sinister government base. Before you can say THE HIDDEN, a massive spider has burst out of a corpse's mouth and is on the run, webbing people up and growing until it reaches behemoth-size proportions. For the first hour and ten minutes, the spider is mainly an animatronic beast before becoming a huge CGI-menace in the traditional "rampage" climax. Mechanical effects for the beastie are generally good, with a few wobbly bits; the CGI effects look, well, just like CGI but I didn't mind them as much here as in other films. The acting is nothing to write home about, as the leads are all supposed teenagers (actually twentysomethings) and the heroine's transformation from geek to Ripley-style heroine is as unbelievable as you'd expect. Mark Phelan is the villain of the piece and his sneering man-in-black comes across as a low-budget Lance Henriksen-alike. The movie has plenty of references to THE X-FILES with rubbery aliens in jars and there are also lots of in-jokes; for instance, we see the body of one "Morrison, J." hidden away in "Area 21" (sic). I was quite pleased with the level of gore on display, with all manner of mutilated bodies, copious slime and gunk, and the centrepiece monster-from-mouth which was quite clearly stolen from THE HIDDEN but which still packs a punch. The swelling heads of the bitten victims are suitably disgusting although the CGI explosions are less than impressive. The film was written on the fly by Boaz Davidson, an Israeli producer who seems to be making a name for himself as the 'Golan-Globus' of the noughties. Director Gary Jones also made MOSQUITO in 1994, another genuinely fun monster flick. While this film is as stupid as you would expect – at one stage our heroes discover a rocket launcher LEFT LYING AROUND in a helicopter on campus – it has a tongue-in-cheek spirit that makes it entertaining, while it never goes for outright laughs as in the dumb EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS. The finale, in which the giant spider rampages through the college campus, is absolutely hilarious stuff, watch out for the guy who tries to jump the bonnet of the police car, brilliant. More rampaging monster flicks need to be like this and less like the execrable GODZILLA remake.
'This is...like a bad science fiction movie'I was expecting this to be absolute rubbish, so imagine my surprise when I found the first half hour of this movie intriguingly watchable with the majority of problems being poor dialogue...but no worries, then the spiders appear! I breathed a sigh of relief as I could begin to laugh at the shoddy effects and all-too-pathetic deaths thrown in amongst a myriad of plot-holes that I literally can't even begin to pick up on. This was a monster movie that should have known it wasn't going to be good, which made it more disappointing when it seems that the director here was thinking they had the next 'Alien' franchise on their hands. An all too serious movie that should have taken the mick out of itself a LOT more.1/10(Will I watch 'Spiders 2'? Probably yeah.)
Following up on a story, a reporter and her crew accidentally uncover a secret government project that turned a spider into a towering giant and must stop its rampage through the city.Overall this one turned out to be quite the decent creature feature. One of the biggest factors to this one is the rather cheesy atmosphere here, as there's quite a large amount of time here not only with the incredibly goofy nature of the human-sized spider running around as well as all of the silly special effects which accounts for a really fun, cheese-filled time. The action furthers the cheese here as the concept of scenes such as the attack in the morgue, the assault on the guards in the basement or the rather cheesy and deliciously corny finale in which the monster-sized spider runs amok throughout the city after escaping from the local college which are just as incredibly cheesy yet ultimately rather fun part of what makes this one so entertaining. This one really seems to revel in the cheesy tones and outlandish scenarios within these scenes since it not only manages to get quite entertaining throughout these on a silly level but also manages to keep the film filled with action so it never lags or becomes boring. This is also a chance to show off the impressive amount of practical effects for both the spider and the gore which is really nice and sticks out against the really obvious CGI that's featured here. The CGI is among the few flaws as there's a lot of scenes that are quite badly ruined by the CGI for either the scene or the effect looks distracting and obvious here. The shuttle crash and the transformation are set-up to be important parts to the film but the horrible CGI in these scenes does manage to look really bad. This does play into the film's other big flaw which is the cheesy feeling and atmosphere throughout this. It's pretty hard to take this one seriously with all the actions, plot-points and special effects all being quite goofy which really undermines this. It manages to hurt this a little but not enough to really hinter this one much.Rated R: Graphic Language and Graphic Violence.
I watched this movie for one reason and one reason only: Lana flawless Parrilla. Obviously my expectations were very low because I knew it was going to be crap, which it was. Lana herself has called the movie "embarrassing." And, let's be honest, she's come a LONG way acting-wise since then (she has the ALMA Award, a hit show, and hundreds of thousands of Evil Regals to prove it). I mean, I still can't wrap my brain around the fact that the dorky, spunky kid with glasses is now the Evil Queen. Anyway, I digress...Overall, NOT a film you should get into if you're looking for something thought-provoking and deeply emotional with award-winning performances that leave you breathless. If you are, you're going to be disappointed very quickly. However, it's quite enjoyable if you're looking for something mindless and cheesy to laugh at. This movie wasn't really even meant to be taken seriously, which makes it even better. So, a great flick if you wanna kill time and have a little fun. Although, I'm laughing so hard at the person in an old review who said, "Lana who? Don't worry, nobody knows who she is!" That's both hilarious and ironic.
