How sad is this?
Clever, believable, and super fun to watch. It totally has replay value.
As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
Unlike other reviewers I believe the real missed opportunity here is the development and character of Mikey, Cuba Gooding's character. The full cast was very strong. The child actors well selected, and the plot predictable but well paced matching the characters. I believe within this script was the shell of a real blockbuster event if the development of the new family was given more time and focus particularly either the character of Cuba Gooding. Helen Mirring was a perfect selection for the Mother/ Lover and gave a very creditable performance. The sanctuary of the country home compared to the violent lifestyle of its inhabitants was well portrayed.
The year is 2012 and I have just completed watching this movie. To be honest I think this is one of the few movies where I saw some intense stuff from Cuba Gooding Jr. however I feel the antagonist could have been a little more satirical and Joseph Gordon was simply wasted in this film. Mirren did OK and the lady love Vanessa Ferlito was expressionless however the plot was interesting. When the question comes to execution this movie is somewhat derailed despite the futile effort of the director, I guess it shows the weakness in the script. What if is the biggest question in this movie's execution. What if the scene was executed in this manner, what if the actor executed the dialogue in this manner and stuff like that. I guess we will know now.One of the biggest disappoint was Mo'nique's role and yet it is one of the better executed role. I guess in Hollywood African American women aren't provided much chance to express their talent again it is a loss to the cinema. On a scale of ten I rate this one 6
The pool table scene gave me hope that this would be a decent movie, but sad to say it did not fit my expectations. The story basically a hit man who goes around killing people, takes on a job to kill the mob leader's wife and the client is the husband. And while trying to kill the wife, the grandma who Cuba Gooding Jr has a affair with tries to stop him even if she was cool with a lot of his past kills, this one didn't sit right with her cause the women they were trying to kill is pregnant. The grandma who was a lady during the flashback is a contract killer and found Cuba Gooding Jr's character when he was a young boy and decided to take him in without killing him, although he witnessed her murder. And good thing he had abusive father or else he would have been dead. Than it goes in a preposterous and predictable direction from there on which does not work well with a movie like this. During the whole film I just wanted it to end quickly cause, the whole premise wasn't entertaining or even intriguing. There is a few shocking scenes thrown in, which is shocking but has no substance to it either. A lot about this film is weird and just not satisfying what so ever when it is finished. There isn't a single likable character in this film and you just don't give a crap what happens to them, as a matter of fact you sort of want them all to die. It is just dull and is a waste of time, I give it a 4 cause although this is a pretty bad film I have seen worse.4/10
As another reviewer stated, this movie does break rules. But is that enough? And through all the rule-breaking, there still is a core/central storyline that does seem familiar, to say the least. OK so some people will/might be offended by the sexual nature of the movie and or maybe by the violence. Although the latter isn't quite as brutal as some other movie efforts, you might have seen. Why is this special then compared to those movies? The cast plays into that. Who would've imagined, Cuba Gooding Jr., Stephen Dorff and Helen Mirren (although only the latter is a real surprise here). A nice little movie, but apart from the obvious scenes that try to provoke a reaction (especially in America and the moral standards, that are implied by some), this isn't really a movie that I would call a classic! I thought it was OK, but it won't shake up your world ...
