I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.
if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.
The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
Bruce Willis plays one of his best older roles in "16 Blocks". I often thought back of "Die Hard with a Vengeance" while watching this movie. Just as in that great Die Hard sequel from the nineties, Bruce chases through New York City, trying to meet a deadline. Just as in Die Hard with a Vengeance he has got a partner who helps him. And just as in several Die Hard movies a bond between the two blossoms. In spirit, this movie has the same charm as "Die Hard with a Vengeance", which is truly the only Die Hard sequel worth seeing...In "16 Blocks" Bruce Willis plays a washed up alcoholic cop, who has to transport a criminal to court. It seems to be a simple job, but unknown to him the criminal is about to testify against several corrupt New York police cops. An assassination attempt is planned to stop the criminal from testifying. Will Bruce Willis get the criminal to court alive?The story really has got many great plot twists and turns. Acting is great. The few jokes are good.But the greatest joy is to watch Bruce Willis and the criminal bond with each other while they struggle to get to court. It is an action movie with lots of room for dialogues however. But I really love that. In that sense it differs from Die Hard with a Vengeance, which was more focused on action alone. This movie truly excels in its true to life portrayal of its characters. Seen this movie many times now, and besides one lesser part of the story, I really enjoy it time and again.
I saw this move for the second time yesterday. If you are looking for the traditional "Die Hard" Bruce Willis, you will be a bit disappointed. There is a fair amount of action which is typical for a Bruce Willis crime film, but his character in this film is much more cerebral, lacking the usual type A personality. His character is quite depressing but by the end you will realize the cause of this mentality. His co-star initially was annoying but he grew on me as the movie progressed to the point that, mixed in that peculiar voice of his, he has a very strong message on morality and regret. The plot can seem unbelievable at times due to geographical small area in which the entire story occurs and the time elapse especially toward the end but not to the point that it brings the move down. The plot flowed at a constant pace and kept me interested. There was an alternate ending available on the DVD which some viewers may find more appealing as it is quite the opposite of the released ending. The director did a really good job of filming angles and working within the crowds of New York City. If you want to see an atypical Bruce Willis action movie with an interesting co-star this could be one for you. Not one I would recommend to watch with a significant other on a date night and I would not begin to compare this to the popular Die Hard franchise but on its own merits it is well worth the watch
An aging alcoholic cop is assigned the task of escorting a witness from police custody to a courthouse 16 blocks away. There are, however, chaotic forces at work that prevent them from making it in one piece. Directed by Richard Donner the genious behind Superman, Lethal Weapon and Assassins this fast paced action drama elevates from Bruce Willis excellent dramatic perfomance but also Yasiin Bey who gives an excellent perfomance as a man who saw something that shouldnt have and along with that the excellent and talented David Morse as a dirty cop. The direction is excellent and some shots or scenes like the one where Jack kills the man who tried to kill Eddie or the scene with the Bus were heart pounding and with an amazing score in the background. Overall a well shot and well directed Drama, Crime, Action film. (A+)
Solid Bruce Willis action film has Bruce as a limping over-the-hill detective who finds himself asked to do a favor transporting a prisoner just sixteen blocks to the courthouse. Instead, he finds himself under siege for said sixteen blocks and caught up in a web of criminals, dirty cops, and conspiracies. For as simple and clichéd a plot here, the script seemed quite overwrought and a tad too self-serious for what is essentially an update of Clint Eastwood's "The Gauntlet," but despite a weak script, the film is solidly directed by veteran action direction Richard Donner ("Lethal Weapon," "Superman," "Ladyhawke," "The Goonies") and Bruce gives a strong performance as always. Not a classic, but still better than the bombastic 4th and 5th "Die Hard" films.
