Nate and Hayes or Savage Island...which did you watch it as? Movies like this were awesome...huge from the Golden Age of the Silver Screen into the '90s when they started to peter out until, well, until they vanished leaving us with nothing but Super Hero films to fill the void......I have nothing against Super Hero films, but I love adventure films too.I can see where folks would not like it, especially the people that take themselves too seriously. It is stuck in a genera that is at once extremely pulp and kind of serialized. Even if it's not a sequel, you know the story. The Goonies, Romancing the Stone, Jake Speed, Firewalker, Vibes, Big Trouble in Little China, Young Sherlock Holmes...and of course the crown, the king, the Indiana Jones movies. They are all close enough to one another to really fit into the same mold. The characters change, the concepts stay the same and....we love it.Enter the Roguish hero and the damsel in distress in an exotic location to find X marking the MacGuffin, but first they have to work their way through obstacles both natural and man made in the form of a nasty antagonist and a couple of henchmen. Throw in a semi-bumbling sidekick and you have what I like to call "High Adventure." "Nate and Hayes" follows that outline and if you are the kind of individual that is still young enough at heart to love adventure films...you will inevitably like this movie. If you are the kind of man or woman that takes everything extremely seriously and refuses to play at all, not matter what it is. If you are the type that would use the word "compete" instead of "play" or "game" than you are going to hate this movie.

I finally watched this movie for the second time last time being when, I was 10 years old and it was very well done. It was funny to see Tommy lee Jones character as a privateer more than a ruthless Pirate, even himself he questioned the term Pirate with the man writing a somewhat half bio on his life. He seemed to be a opportunistic character who dabbled in everything from legal to mildly illegal activities as he states. I throughly enjoyed Capt. Ben Pease's character ruthless and funny a true pirate and slave trader. i would love to have seen a further adventure of Ben Pease's character and crew. The only thing, I did not like about the movie was how Tommy Lee Jones abandoned his crew amongst the Indian natives when the deal went sour, it did not seem like his character to run away leaving them to fight it out alone and die only himself to be rescued by the preacher and his wife later on from a noose. I do not see anything that this movie ripped off from Indiana Jones or any real comparisons except for the bridge scene which Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom ripped off from this movie. The title of the movie is very gay and weak, I guess Savage Island is a much better title for the movie. I am waiting for The Island (Pirate movie) starring Michael Caine and David Warner to come to DVD who knows what the hold up is???

I find it odd how people think this movie is a "thrilling action-adventure". I'd have to say, it's quite bad, and it was very clearly MEANT to be quite bad. There's a ninja, a bunch of Nazis (not specifically noted as Nazis, but you can't help but know in your heart that that's what they are), a pirate ship AND a steamship, musketmen fighting dudes with revolvers, the bad guys seem completely clichéd in their ignorance ("They're plugging the eye holes! We're blind!" "It's too bad we can't just pull those hats out, eh guys?"), the scene near the end where the Germans are fighting the Pirates (who all line up nicely, by the way), and are promptly shot to bits without ever landing a single blow is incredibly sad ("Wow, lucky day for us. This team of professionally trained soldiers don't know how to shoot worth a damn. Woohoo!"), and the way that German leader dies is purely comical. And yet, I'm not trying to INSULT this film. It is a parody, and a hilarious one at that. Although, it may not have been successful in that venture (most people seem to believe it's a serious adventure film!), it still wins a place in my heart. I'd give it 8 out 10, for a good afternoon's laugh.

It would have have been nice if the title over here and in the UK "Savage Islands" would have been the title in the US, instead of the crappy, very regular title "Nate And Hayes." WOW! That title is so exciting! Not. Whoever thought up of the US should be ashamed of themselves, as this movie that plentiful action throughout, but because of the title, hit rock-bottom at the box office. Shame! Anyhow, as long as it has plenty of cult admirers, this shall remain on the greatest underrated Action/Adventure films! Tommy Lee Jones, Mike O'Keefe and Jenny Seagrove excel in this underrated masterpiece and it would have been nice if it could get a re-released digitally-remastered print in all the cinemas. Then maybe, just maybe people would find out just what they were missing on. Yeah, that would be nice, very nice. Also, word of mouth is very important, thus if the public could praise the movie and spread it to their friends, "Savage Islands" could get a second chance! The chance it deserved 22 years ago! For the meantime, check out this movie- It kicks arse!
