Fresh and Exciting
It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
I'll keep this review short as many others have already explained the film. Overall, this is a slow moving film that doesn't really go anywhere. The trailer makes the film look like a comedy which is why I chose it. However, the film seems more about teen depression. I loved the way the film started, it's straight in and we're off. It was going well up until they met Anton Yelchin and then the film slowed down and didn't really go anywhere after that. In someways you can blame the trailer for that. I was expecting a sassy murder comedy but got a much darker, slower moving film. I quite liked it's but I feel it just missing something. Anyway, overall a 6/10 for me.
Cory Finley's 2017 film debut Thoroughbreds its a piece of refined craft and style which manages to merge between thriller and black comedy in a very satisfying way, creating a dark tonal pitch which is played along a smart and kinda sorkinian dialgue who takes us inside the conflicted and dysfunctional mind of its characters. The Style its the Golden Rule If anything can be said about this movie its probably that it has an amazing amount of style in each one of its elements, starting by the story itself: the tale of a young pair of millennial yuppies who are trying to get rid of a despisable rich man who happens to be the stepfather of one of them. Since the beginning of the movie you can feel that it's going to be a weird but funny journey Following by the characters: Two young sophisticated ladies both intricately strange, whose own motivation is to get away with their plan no matter what, the both have two particular affected psyches which makes them a hell of a pair. And finally the aesthethical: the aesthtetic factor is one of the most importants, since the first.shot you can see and hear that wonderful universe of the bourgeoisie, which is filled with flaws under his perfection-like mask. Here is 7 reasons to watch Thoroughbreds: 1. Good Story 2. Neat Cinematography 3. Sardonic Tone 4. Fantastic Costumes 5. Crazy Music 6. Pretty Decent Acting 7. Lots and lots of Style
While undeniably beautiful, Thoroughbreds suffers from a overall lack of narrative clarity. Despite some moments of genuine tension and emotion, an otherwise strong cast is given little room to enliven the scenes. Overall the simple premise remains focused and allows for a competent thriller to emerge.
In his directorial debut, Cory Finley follows Martin McDonagh's distinctive combination of both violence and morality, and presenting them in a whimsical and cynical way. It's very clear that Finley is influenced by movies like The Shining, and that's not just in the visual way, like using bright colors, tracking shots,, etc, but also in terms of presenting the plot; the way Kubrick used in The Shining of showing and tell, yet never making every detail explained. And while here the risking of leaving some unanswered questions by no means reached the The Shining level, Cory Finley left a room for us to make some interpretations about some ambiguous minor details. The movie feels so flat and cold, and that really give kinda creepy atmosphere that is never avoid of irony and eccentricity. Also, this cold atmosphere matches the psychology of the movie's characters, specially Amanda (Olivia Cooke) who suffers a complete lack of emotion. That being said, this very atmosphere that was once supporting the movie, became very mannered and stilted after using it with and without reason. I think there was no need from sticking with this creepy tone after the main plot kicked off, and when the movie decided to delve into the character's minds. It seems to be a minor flaw, but it's effect during the viewing is very big. The movie's plot is genuine as well as the characters. Speaking of the characters, they are well-developed, and support the movie's message. Yes, this movie has a message! But the real surprise here is that the message about the friendship and empathy, and that they are instincts or gifts from god that seem to be faded from us, as humans beings. The Movie also suffers from using unnecessary allegories, and its final act, which leads to the ending, isn't as satisfying nor riveting as the rest acts. In general, I think Thoroughbreds is a very unique take on this genre, and it proves that Cory Finley has a very promising career. I think he's gonna be one of the best horror/thriller filmmakers!(7.5/10)
