Smart People
Professor Lawrence Wetherhold might be imperiously brilliant, monumentally self-possessed and an intellectual giant -- but when it comes to solving the conundrums of love and family, he's as downright flummoxed as the next guy.

Memorable, crazy movie
I cannot think of one single thing that I would change about this film. The acting is incomparable, the directing deft, and the writing poignantly brilliant.
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.
a perfect blend of story , performance and humor , movies like this and I wonder , how can I get a movie like this among the garbage I get to see with only better marketing and more stupidity . Ellen page and DENNIS QUID are so talented , I mean he is an accomplished actor and makes it look like a documentary with authentic acting and she is maybe the best in her generation. it is funny too .
A film by director Noam Murro, "Smart People" stars Dennis Quaid as Lawrence Wetherhold, a pretentious English professor. Lawrence's daughter (Ellen Page), the overachieving Vanessa, is similarly pompous."Smart People's" second half finds Vanessa and Lawrence learning to be less uptight and more sympathetic toward the wants, needs and interests of the "academically challenged". Teaching these lessons are Lawrence's brother (Thomas Church) and a local doctor (Sarah Jessica Parker). Trite but watchable, Thomas Church steals the show as an affable slacker. For a better film about similarly dysfunctional intellectuals, see Noah Baumbach's "The Squid and the Whale".6/10 – Worth one viewing.
(Plot) A widowed professor falls in love (Sarah Jessica Parker) but his daughter (Ellen Paige) is very disobedient and beats to her own drum. He also has to deal with an unwarranted visit from his annoying brother (Thomas Haden Church) I don't remember much about this movie, but I do remember that it was a decent film, and refreshingly unorthodox. It has a quirky style to it, and I got into it for the most part. It also helps that it has an A + cast. Ellen Paige is one of my favorite up and coming actresses and her snarky performance delighted me. I dug her obsession with fancy words. It also had a great contrast in personality with Paige & Jessica Parker. Parker is a rather subdued personality compared to her, and the way they clashed gave me some chuckles. Dennis Quaid is a tad unsympathetic, but fantastic nonetheless. You'll like him, because you won't be able to help it. Haden Church is a hoot in his roleFinal Thoughts: I kinda liked it. Its quirky style may not appeal to others, but those tired of the same Hollywood drivel will find stuff to like about it. Worth a watch6/10
Just because a person is intellectually does not mean he/she has the social skills to make it in the world--CAse in point Lawrence Wetherold. He is a highly intelligent English professor whose pompous attitude lead him to have no friends. He is also hung up on his dead wife Caroline to the point where after his daughter and brother donate his wife's clothes to Goodwill-he buys them back. When he meets an emergency room doctor he is smitten but doesn't know how to act and eventually loses her. This a wake up call for him as he transforms his attitude and starts to behave in a more humane way. Vanesssa, Lawrences daughter is an equally brainy type. However, she too is a social misfit as she is spending too much time getting good grades and taking care of her dad. She gets life experience lessons from Lawrences brother Chuck by getting high on pot and getting drunk at a bar. There is more but just watching this movie I got a good lesson in family dynamics and a few good laughs.
