At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
Dana Marschz is a failed actor and recovering alcoholic who's moved to Tucson to teach high school drama, where he's plagued by bad reviews, student indifference, budget woes, and his own teaching limitations.Because the other electives are closed, he finds himself with a large class of seeming gang-bangers, and the principal informs him that drama will be cut next trimester. On the advice of a student reviewer, Dana decides to stage his own play, a sequel to "Hamlet" in which the prince and Jesus, with the use of a time machine, try to save Gertrude and Ophelia.....Like all good British comedians, Coogan gets to headline an American comedy on his own merits, don't count around the world in 80 days, the film was about spectacle. And we get more or less the same result as we had before, mediocre film, mediocre returns. It's not Coogans fault, the material he is given is far below him, and it shows. The idea is sound and the actual 'Hamlet 2' is breathtakingly bizarre, it's just the rest of the film fails miserably with typecast college kids and throwing a couple of bizarre roles to slightly famous people doesn't make a movie funnier.Like other films where British comedians have took a Hollywood film on their own, True Identity, Drop Dead Fred, and Ghost Town, the idea is sound but the outcome is unfunny. Coogan appears like he isn't allowed to be Coogan, and explore more, Instead he falls over and puts on a ridiculous accent.Wanted to like it, but just didn't in the end.
I had a good time with Hamlet 2. An offensive film that has laughs throughout the entire film. I will admit that it is offensive, but it's a great movie. The film has a great cast and it is absolutely ridiculous. Hamlet 2 is the story of Dana Marsh, a has been drama teacher(played by Steve Coogan, who is fantastic in this film). He is a bit of a loser. His drama class is full of Mexicans. He soon comes up with a story for Hamlet 2. Which is the most offensive play you will ever see. I am not going to go into anything else about the plot. Because the entire film is funny.Hamlet 2 is insanely hilarious. I hope you will enjoy it just as much as I did. Because Hamlet 2 is a ton of fun and I think you should look for it on DVD.It's a little known film that I think most will like unless you're one of those really serious people who won't laugh at anything. Steve Coogan's breakthrough performance really is a breakthrough. I liked Elizabeth Shue's performance and I really liked the entire film. It is a little known comedy gem. Big thumbs up and I think you should look for it on DVD.
Hamlet 2 is a comedy about Dana Marschz (Steve Coogan), a failed actor turned drama teacher. When his class is lacking in grades, and his class is about to be shut down, he makes the greatest, and most offensive play of all time. It is Hamlet 2, in which Jesus builds a time machine to bring back everyone from Hamlet back to life. The movie is extremely offensive, which didn't even matter so much as that the film doesn't have the huge amount of laughs it should of had. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty funny. Catherine Keener plays Dana's wife, Brie. David Arquette plays Brie's crazy friend, Gary, and Elisabeth Shue plays Elisabeth Shue. The supporting cast gets a lot of laughs, but the movie itself revolves around a lot of flat jokes. The really, really, really huge laughs come from the play at the end where they play the song, Rock Me Sexy Jesus. The play is the foundation of laughs for this movie. It makes us consider what plays we're really watching. That said, racism jokes and people getting hurt jokes go a little too far. This movie started to push the boundaries of what was funny or not. I'm not saying this is a terrible movie, just a movie that has nowhere close to the amount of laughs it should have.
Hamlet 2 was an awesome movie. Very witty, uplifting, and hilarious. The reviews definitely did not do it justice. I think most people that saw this movie had something else in mind when they went to see it so they all watched it with biased views, because they weren't getting what they thought they were. The characters were all played by good actors and the acting was really good. the only thing i didn't like was the fact that it was supposed to be in Tucson, AZ and it was filmed in Albuquerque, NM. The directors said it was due to the unwelcoming Tucson, which is definitely not true as there are actually many film studios in Tucson..
