I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible

This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

A combination adventure/comedy/romance, it is simply superb. It has flair and it moves fast. Everyone is good in it, even, surprisingly, Racquel. There's more than a touch of parody and self-parody. It's like they all watched too many swashbuckling movies. To wit: D'Artagnan (York) tries to extinguish a candle with a flourish of his sword across the flame. It doesn't work; he shakes his head, removes his gauntlet; and puts it out with his finger and thumb. Racquel's husband, Spike Milligan, keeps trying to arrange to have sex with her, but something always goes wrong, including and especially the interference of the Cardinal Richelieu and his henchmen. And Heston is superb as Richelieu. Great turn as villain. Great because he plays it straight. That's what makes him so effective. He and Christopher Lee play off each other brilliantly. (He walks into his torture chamber, talking to either Spike or Chistoperher Lee (I forget which), and one of the victims hanging from within one of the cages says very respectfully, "And how are you, Your grace." The fey king who has his courtyard lawn manicured like a chessboard plays the game with live dogs. He is perfect, too. The swordplay, of which there is plenty, is brilliantly choreographed. They actually had to learn to fight with swords. Lee almost was killed. If there is a hero, it's D'Artagnan's man-servant. When I saw it as a young man when it came out, the audience cheered loudly when the guys came to the rescue at the end.

Enjoyable adaptation of the oft-filmed Alexandre Dumas novel. One of the better versions I've seen. I should say upfront that I've never been a huge fan of the story. I read it as a kid before ever seeing any of the movies. It's undeniably a classic but it was never a favorite of mine. This movie is pretty faithful to the book, although there's much more emphasis on comedy. The cast is terrific. Richard Chamberlain, Oliver Reed, and Frank Finlay are great as the title characters. Michael York does a fine job as d'Artagnan. If I had one complaint, it's that d'Artagnan seems a dim-witted rube in his earliest scenes but after becoming friends with the Musketeers, he's suddenly much smarter and more competent. There doesn't seem to be any reason for this beyond "we thought the shtick in the early scenes was funny." Raquel Welch is stunning and quite good in a humorous part. Faye Dunaway is also enjoyable. Christopher Lee and Charlton Heston are fun. Period costumes and sets are nice. Filmed at the same time as its sequel, The Four Musketeers. It's not the kind of movie I rewatch often, but it is entertaining.

A wonderful film, as was the sequel. I believe that they were actually one movie edited to make two but I could be wrong. The opening credit sequence still never fails to give me goosebumps whenever I see it. Combined with the marvellous music it remains as fresh as when it was first released Oliver Reed is awesome in it, as is the rest of the cast. I truly believe he was worthy of an Oscar for his performance as Athos.Faye Dunaway is gorgeous and sexy and to my delight and surprise Raquel Welch shows a comic sensibility too. Christopher Lee makes a great villain and Richard Lester's idiosyncratic way of overdubbing comic asides from the peripheral characters make the whole thing a joy. The fight sequences have an authenticity which was never achieved before these movies. The costumes, locations and scenery are sumptuous and absorbing (Oscars should have been awarded) and I only hope for a Blu-ray high quality release with proper full sound to make my enjoyment complete. A great pity that Oliver Reed is only remembered for his drinking rather than the kind of performance he gives here.

Wide-eyed bumpkin D'Artagnan (York) comes a cropper after heeding his father's parting words: "Fight, remember!" Barely minutes after setting foot in Paris, the feisty fellow has already challenged three strangers to a duel: luckily for him, they come by the names of Athos (Reed), Porthos (Finlay) and Aramis (Chamberlain).Interrupted by the Cardinal's guards (who proclaim public fights illegal), they turn their swords on the religious killjoys instead. Realising the able D'Artagnan is more use as a friend than a foe, a new partnership is (at first reluctantly) forged in the wake of the skirmish.Luckily for D'Artagnan, these are just the guys you want on your side when there's a Queen's reputation at stake. The adulterous royal floozy (Chaplin) has given her lover, the English Prime Minister (Ward), her diamonds as a keepsake. Diamonds King Louis XIII (Cassel) would like her to wear to a ball in a few day's hence. Oops. It's up to D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers to retrieve them. Ranged against our heroes are a deadly spin-doctoring Cardinal Richelieu (Heston), and his one-eyed henchmen Rochefort - a delightfully deadpan Lee.Rumored to have been originally conceived as another Beatles vehicle by director Lester (Paul as D'Artagnan? 'Fat Elvis-period' John as Athos?), it's probably a good job that film never got made, as the stellar cast herein elevates this from caper movie to polished - if somewhat madcap - classic.Oliver Reed's Athos, in particular, is a revelation. The actor plays him with equal measures of brute force and elegance. Unlike other Musketeer outings, 'Flashman' writer MacDonald Fraser's script and dialogue remains pretty faithful to the source material, without tripping over the swordplay (which is refreshingly unshowy and realistic - often a swift kick in the dangly bits will often suffice in the fight scenes).Lester's evocation of 17th century Parisian life, meanwhile, easily matches Terry Gilliam for Olde Worlde atmos - from the dissolute excess of palace life, in which dogs are used as living chess pieces on the lawn, to the squalor beyond the palatial gates. All this, and Raquel Welch as Constance: "I've never washed the legs of a woman", babbles a besotted D'Artagnan. "But I have washed a horse. And with a horse you start at the top."
