Monte Walsh
Monte Walsh and Chet Rollins are long-time cowhands, working whatever ranch work comes their way, but "nothing they can't do from a horse." Their lives are divided between months on the range and the occasional trip into town. Monte has a long-term relationship with prostitute Martine Bernard, while Chet has fallen under the spell of the widow who owns the hardware store. Camaraderie and competition with the other cowboys fill their days, until one of the hands, Shorty Austin, loses his job and gets involved in rustling and killing. Then Monte and Chet find that their lives on the range are inexorably redirected.

Save your money for something good and enjoyable
This story has more twists and turns than a second-rate soap opera.
This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.
Blistering performances.
Selleck and Carradine are members of the cowboy subculture of post-war Wyoming and, boy, do they have fun when they're not working. They have the esprit and solidarity of the U. S. Marine Corps.Alas, the West is being taken over by the suits, "Eastern money," capitalist entrepreneurs who downsize everything to maximize profits. That's okay except that cowboys go the way of itinerant tinkers. If the beginning is raucous, the end is tragic really. As his way of life is squashed by higher economic powers, he loses his friends one by one and turns into a kind of Willy Loman, talking alone to his horse.I don't want to repeat any observations from my earlier review of the original "Monte Walsh", with Lee Marvin. The stories, and even the individual scenes, are pretty much the same.Tom Selleck is okay in the lead role. He's better at some things, like bronc busting, than anybody else and maybe a bit more moral, but otherwise he's just one of the boys, subject to the same physical and spiritual insults, comfortably within Northrop Frye's "low mimetic" mode -- just one of us reg'lar fellers who bleeds after a fist fight and doesn't always come out on top.
great movie truly captured the flavor of the west. another great western in tom sellecks' film library!!! thanks tom!!have met several people that have worked with tom on movies in new Mexico and all have found him to be a down to earth guy that is grounded and real!!. this is a rarity in todays society . as a budding 53 year old actor who has longed to be in a good if not great western i am truly envious of someone like tom who makes it look so easily real on film.. having struggled thru horrible trials in the independent film industry, it is great to see quality work done in a professonal manner by someone who deserves, more respect from the mainstream film industry, thanks Dave Barnett moffat Colorado...
'Monte Walsh' is not just a western or a cowboy movie. It's a movie about cowboys and that point make all the difference. In fact, 'Monte Walsh' tells a story that is universal in it's own theme; a story concerning the end of a time, the novelties of the beginning of the 20º century and the progressive death of a code of honor and a way of life. The movie is beautifully directed by Australian director Simon Wincer. Tom Selleck is perfect in the title role and the support cast is good too, especially Keith Carradine and William Devane. The only problem with the movie lies in some scenes, like the suicide of the veteran of the Civil War (in my opinion, a bit overacted) and the last scene, that brings a irony that sounds strange and dislocated with the rest. But after all, this movie is a really standout among the most recent western movies.
I believe that the movie, Monte Walsh tells me to strive for my desires and dreams because in the movie, Monte continues doing his job as a cowboy even though he lost his close friends and he continues even with technology taking his job away. However, at one point he has second thought on whether he is doing the right thing to leave his passion for being a cowboy.I saw this movie at my father's house on DVD on September 25th 2005. I never saw or knew that this was a TV special, so the first time I saw it was on DVD. At one point I never had an intention of seeing this movie until my father recommended it, so I decided to watch it.In the movie, it shows Monte and his friends enjoying their jobs as cowboys. However, at a point he loses his closest friends Shorty and Chip. He lost Shorty because out of all the cowboys he had the least experience in the group, so he was fired. Chip, however, left because he wanted to have a better living, so he became a hardware shop owner. This reminds me of my passion for the Japanese language. I have lost many friends who have gone on to do much better things because they thought there wasn't much work that involve the language. They might be right, but I plan on staying on track and hope to use it in my career.Technology had put a big burden on Monte's job. With automobiles making horse obsolete and trains doing the job of moving animals much faster; the need for cowboys was decreasing. Monte didn't even like fences being built because they prevented him from going places and he wanted to travel all over the country. Even with these advancements he still continued doing his job. This was Monte's biggest difficulty to overcome, but he made it over in the end. I have also had a difficulty in my life and it was my ability to socialize. This had been a problem for me since I was really young and I wasn't able to make many friends because of it. Recently, I have been getting more social and this difficulty is starting to disappear. When Monte lost all his friends; he had second thoughts on whether to continue his job or not. He was considering marriage and even considered an alternative job. He was worried about this decision to change, so he talked with his fiancée, Martine and she told him that she would love him regardless of what job he had. After this conversation he decided that he would continue his job as a cowboy. I, too, have had second thoughts like when I was moving from my mother's house to my father's. I was constantly wondering "is this the right choice" and "will I be happier over there". In the end I made a good choice and I am glad I made the choice to live with my father. I believe that many people have desires that they want to go after and once they watch this film they will want to go after those dreams.
