Wonderful character development!
Admirable film.
The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
I didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
This movie truly exceeded my original expectations.Okay, maybe not "exceeded", but it certainly wasn't as terrible as I thought it was going to be, although close.I had rented this movie a couple of weeks ago, along with several other films, and never hearing about or any mention of it I thought it was going to be one of the more unforgettable films I'd have sat through. After watching it, however, I was proved wrong. The first half of the movie seemed somewhat difficult to laugh through, and contained a lot of badly-played-through jokes, but the second half completely redeemed it, in a way. I was consistently cracking up over and over. Ice Box and Tracy Morgan acted well all the way through, but I must say, Katt Williams' performance was absolutely, comp-uhletely astounding. I would watch the movie over and over just because he's in it.Overall, this odd dramedy of an awkward story happens to be a casual, fun, and even compelling movie that I would definitely request for you to see in your spare time.
It is not often that I use the word "bigot" but I just saw this movie and when I saw that over 36% of IMDb voters gave it a "1", bigotry came to mind. With another 16% giving it a "10" that means that over half of the people rating this film have done a disservice to the IMDb community. Any rational viewer will see that this film is neither a "1" nor a "10." There are many funny bits in this film and it does have a certain poignancy as it makes its way through the story of an inept attempt to rob a church. Is it a great movie? N0. Is it a terrible waste of time? Absolutely not. It is light-hearted entertainment with some serious twists. It is worth seeing. Open message to IMDb: how about not counting a user's vote unless they also leave comments to support their vote? Perhaps then we would get more meaningful ratings.
There is no real need for a comedy to be so exaggerated. You can make something hilarious, but believable. In the entire movie the only couple of people who gave a believable performance was Ice Cube himself. Which is quite a compliment considering he happens to be the main character. He was menacing enough to get his part right.Chi McBride, an actor I'm fond of, is a believable pastor and a worthy Christian. No matter how unreal his situation was.Tracy Morgan as LeeJohn had some decent back-story behind his character but his actions were idiotic and exaggerated.Durrell's "love interest" tried way too hard to be the "independant woman".The judge, while also a fine actor, was terrible in the role he was shoved into and was also, extremely exaggerated. The black and white lawyers was a terrible stereotype and they acted terribly to begin with, leading to extremely terrible and MORE unbelievable court scenes.I enjoyed Katt Williams' performance, it was nice to see that he didn't have to rely on language too much to be funny. (I don't mind language at all, big fan of his comedy but it's /always/ nice to see an actor or comedian be able to step above it from time to time.Unfortunately, even as a comedy, the entire heist situation was moronic. As said before, Chi McBride as the Pastor stepped against Ice Cube's character with some realistic resilience, but it ends there.Come on; an old lady gets up, steps up, and speaks against a man with a gun? Durell led a believable performance that he probably would have shot somebody if it wasn't for the movie being a comedy.I did not appreciate how the movie seemed to "skip" or remove a few minutes of time to just bring in the deaf and blind cleaner with the moneybag with NO explanation on where it was. I do not like being treated like a moron, even in a comedy, thank you.And finally; It wasn't too bad of a movie but don't expect much out of it like I did. The commercials make it look more than it does (Which is the flaw in judging a movie by it's trailers.) Overall, a solid 4-4.5 out of 10.
Let me start off with the downsides of this movie. There was a lot of unbelievable material, and it got so out of hand at times that I really couldn't enjoy it for how ridiculous it was being. Some of the acting was poor, and I felt the actors and actresses really didn't care how they portrayed their characters, except maybe a few, and therefore they ended up being unlikable and ultimately forgettable. Most of the funny material wasn't funny at all, and I got super tired super fast with all of the lame jokes and mundane, black comedy antics. Not to mention it was predictable to the point where I wasn't enjoying any surprises. Now, the actual upsides. I did laugh a few times, and it was because the material was actually humorous. No, it wasn't hysterically rolling on the floor laughing, but it got smiles and chuckles nonetheless. It managed to keep me entertained, and I was actually sucked into the story plot a little. I became interested because even though most every attribute about this film is average or poor, the plot truthfully seemed endearing to me, for some odd reason, and overall, while the movie is mediocre, and I certainly wouldn't watch it again, it's not terrible. I wouldn't recommend it, but you don't have to completely avoid it, per say. It was nothing special, but if you feel like watching it, be my guest.
