Good movie, but best of all time? Hardly . . .
After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.
Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
So Close? Not Even Close is more like it, this showy but shallow action flick from the usually reliable Corey Yuen missing its mark by a mile. Shu Qi plays sexy assassin Lynn, Zhao Wei is her cute computer whizz sister Sue, and Karen Mok plays Yat Hong, the tough cop trying to track them down, but a trio of appealing female leads isn't nearly enough to compensate for the unexceptional plot and a glut of CGI and wire enhanced slow-motion action scenes that fail to get the adrenaline pumping.A dull romance between Lynn and an old flame drags things down even further, making it a long slog to the admittedly fun final showdown, which pits Wei and Mok against countless gun toting henchmen and a samurai sword wielding boss.I rate So Close a probably-too-generous 4/10 for the juicy squib work and the samurai sword fight, although I almost knocked off a point for all of the computer generated broken glass that isn't fooling anybody.
I have little new to add to earlier reviews, and I haven't seen the film for several years. I'm writing mainly so that I can vote, because I really enjoyed the film and I think it deserves a rating of at least 7. That's true despite the disappointing plot development in the last third of the film, mentioned below as a spoiler. And other undeniable weaknesses--fight sequences OK but not spectacular or innovative, pretty weak and meandering plot, and questionable acting. But the film is still very appealing as a comedy about assassin sisters' loving rivalry, just because it's cute, somewhat differently from Jackie Chan movies, which are cute masculine, while So Close is cute feminine. How? Well, the sweet song 'Close to You' is a somewhat important plot element, as well as a theme signal. The main plot driver is that the older sister wants to shield the younger, not from risky dating but from murder activities, making her tend the computers instead. One dangerous fight takes place between the two sisters in a bathroom, where the suspense is really due to the chance that one or both will slip and brain themselves on the tub. And another major fight scene, between the older sister and the female cop, is so brutal that one actress tears the lead Qi Shu's blouse--shocking despite the fact that some early soft porn films starring Qi Shu still can be found floating around the web. In all of the fights, the women mug extremely broadly after each attack. You get the impression that this crew enjoyed themselves much more than even Chan crews, where everyone is really scared that Jackie really will cripple himself during a gratuitous stunt. It also helps that Qi Shu is on at least one list I've seen as the number one most beautiful actress in the world, so having her take part in sexy fight scenes is a major advantage of the movie, possibly biasing my rating. But that leads to the final plot weakness--Spoiler, though it's spoiled on the IMDb official preview, anyway: Qi Shu's character is killed protecting her sister, well before the final epic fight sequence--of all the major characters to get killed off!
First of all, the cinematography on this film is beautiful enhancing the beautiful characters that fills the screen. All the props are stylish, and background well thought out to bring maximum beauty of the girls performing the action. While two girl assassin team sound's like candidate for a campy eye candy action drama, there's no cheese in this very well crafted movie. Even Hollywood would be envious to have such pretty girls performing high action stunts as in this movie. The movie gets better as it progresses through the story until the final show down between the Master (Yasuaki Kurata), Sue (Wei Zhao), and Hong (Karen Mok).Qi Shu, Wei Zhao, plays the role of assassins with Karen Mok playing the detective on their tail. All of them look great on this movie, and camera angles are thought out to heighten their beauty. One honorable mention goes to Yasuaki Kurata. For someone that's almost 60 years old, he sure can move, and his appearance hasn't changed very much in 30 years which is amazing.Great movie to watch, and I can rate it high even compared to Hollywood big budget movie like Mission Impossible.Oh, and did I mention that Karen Mok has a nice rear end ?
HK has always been able to produce quality movies. Chicks kicking the ass out of guys is just always a great ride. You see these 3 hot girls, who are smooth and graceful. The action is unbelievable. It's what you expect from HK, but it still bothers me that the glass cgi are visible fake. The acting is solid, but after all u don't need Oscar type of acting in these kind of film. I found Shu Qi to be the most sexy and captured the best performance. The others where great too.SPOILERS AHEADThere are only 2 things i didn't like: 1. Shu Qi death 2. Some bad CGI and simple plotEND SPOILERSOtherwise this is a great film to watch. It's sometimes funny, it has some h'wood type of drama, and of course it has HK action. So it's very very very Sexy, Action-packed, and entertaining.8/10 Because of the 2 things i disliked
