Pretty Good
Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

This movie is a classic comedy that really hits home for those who were in high school in the late '70s and early '80s. Although it is supposed to take place in the '70s, having grown up in that decade and the following one, it feels and looks more like the early '80s. In any case, what I love about this film is that it captures the vibe of that era perfectly. For example, nobody in high school today would dare drive a car like the beat-up and seriously disheveled piece of crap VW station wagon that Joe and Hubs drive. Yet such embarrassing means of transport were de rigueur back in the day. I even knew someone who drove a modified post office truck to school. You see, not everyone had money back then. And, rather than be embarrassed by this fact, most just made the best they could of it - like Joe, Hubs, and Tack. In fact, what I like most about the film is that it depicts the middle class of this country like it really is - stripped of all of its pretensions and insecurities. The backbone of our middle class is the blue-collar and working classes. Without them, there would be no middle class. They do all the hard, back breaking physical work necessary for the upper middle class to continue living in comfort. When I first saw this movie, I viewed superficially as just one more good-times stoner film. Having watched it repeatedly, however, I see more clearly the subtleties embedded involving coping with the class and social distinctions we all have to cope with growing up in our culture. Definitely a classic film even if low budget. I would compare it more, though, with the Cheech and Chong films than with Dazed and Confused.
I just watched the special edition of this movie and the commentary explains a lot. I watched this movie at least 100 times in the 90's. They did not identify the time period because they did not have the budget to maintain it (although it is supposed to be in the 70's). The production company compares it to Dazed and Confused on the box not the writers. Dazed and confused was a lame movie that tried to be funny at times and serious at times and failed at both. Stoned age tries only to be completely ridiculous and succeeds. If you liked Dazed and confused get a life and don't watch this movie it is intended for people who take themselves less seriously.
If your going to watch this movie make sure you have a case of Ox 45's .and they better be talls. The Schnappster would work too if you are also wanting to party with the foxes. One of the main characters in the movie is named Joe he reminds me of Mondoman. Who's Mondoman you ask? Just some dude. There's also a chick in the movie who looks just like the chick on the cover of the Virgin Killers album. You can't forget about Crump's brother, even though he's jerk. I'd kick his ass if it wasn't for his massive upper body strength. Any way, the movie is great! The movie has some great lessons in it. But really the is about Joe. "Ever since Joe got hit by that laser at that Blue Oyster Cult Show he's been acting like a p***y" but enough of Joe. Joe and Hubs technically worm Crump's brothers chicks, and I'm not talking about chicks with zits I'm talking about fine chicks. That's where the movie gets good. I don't want to give away the whole movie but just remember: Every band puts out at least one p***y song so they can find out who the f***ts are!
