Why so much hype?
So much average
it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.
The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
This begins with an introduction scene where a couple who employed a house-keeper that owns Robert the Doll are now at breaking point because of weird happenings and have decided to get rid of her...and "Robert". The story then moves on to a new family who have employed the same house-keeper, for the last couple of years, but want to get rid of her because she's forgetful and is becoming a bit of a nuisance, in her position. After being fired she gets pretty upset and gives Robert the Doll to the family's young son as a parting gift - I thought this was a bit harsh, to be honest. This is like a very amateur (but enjoyable to me) attempt at crossing Chucky with Anabelle. If you enjoyed those movies and don't have your expectations set too high (as it has a 3.3 rating you probably won't, anyway) you might get through this. Although the acting and the plot is pretty lame it does carry the haunted doll atmosphere quite well. I've given this a 4/10 because I managed to get to end, otherwise it would have got a 2 or 3. Apart from a few frustrating "seriously!!!???" moments this wasn't too bad. If anyone remembers the British TV series, (Roald Dahl's) "Tales of the Unexpected", back in the late 70's, early 80's, then this is a similar kind of production, quality-wise.
Andrew Jones writes and directs this creepy tale of the supernatural. The story is claimed to be true. Paul(Lee Bane)and Jenny(Suzie Garton)are having enough problems dealing with Jenny's illness. Paul has clients to deal with in town, while Jenny uses her time painting in her home studio. Young son Gene(Flynn Allen)spends a lot his time in his room and there is the housekeeper Agatha(Judith Haley)that takes care of the home and sees after the boy. Jenny grows tired of the forgetful cleaning woman and demands she leave. Before Agatha departs, she leaves Gene with a vintage doll named Robert. An ugly sight to look upon, but the boy likes Robert the doll. The old woman tells Jenny that she would be sorry. Soon, terror begins about the household and young Gene will tell of his talking to Robert. And when Robert doesn't like you, he does something about it.Not totally uninteresting, but with better actors this film could have been something to talk about. Filmed in Wales, I would have expected maybe some fog, rain or howling winds that could have aided in a scarier atmosphere. Robert the doll is creepy enough to look at, but the music is outstandingly spooky. Kudos to the trailers for making me watch this.
Beginning with an obvious rip-off from 'Annabelle', the story orbits the hard-to-like character: wife and mother Jen. Pathetically fragile, self-involved, demanding, and laden with First-World problems - a victim before the film even begins. The actress turns in a good performance but some poor choices were made with the portrayal. With it being so difficult to get on-side with her, any suspense is lost in favour of sadistic hope. The child actor is nearly as wooden as the doll. It's distracting, whenever he has a line we're reminded that "this is a movie". It fails as a horror with more unintended laughs than scares.
I thought I would give this film a chance. After watching 30 minutes I was wanting to turn it off it was so bad. It was slow and not a lot happening what killed it was the pathetic acting and terrible scripting. The entire story has been ripped from other movies. It appears that because this film is English that English people feel inclined to say this is a good movie which it is not.I wonder if any of the people that love this movie have ulterior motives so many new accounts.A creepy wooden doll with more of a wooden execution...
