How sad is this?
Admirable film.
The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.
The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.
If you're a fan of completely brainless action, Adam Rifkin is your kind of guy. He could be the most brainless director on the face of the planet, and I for one applaud him for that reason. Don't bother him with details like plot or coherence, he's really more of a "let's randomly have corpses crash into a windshield" type of guy. This movie is pretty much "Speed" with a sense of humour, it's a lot of fun and the lack of any real creative story lines is very well-concealed. Furthermore, Charlie Sheen is actually pretty good in it. He genuinely comes of as a very sympathetic and misunderstood protagonist, which is pretty impressive when you're actually Charlie freakin' Sheen. The ending is also very satisfying, it's predictable but in an excellent way. One last thing: Anthony Kiedis and Flea are in this too, which is just fascinatingly bizarre. Very enjoyable flick.
This movie is one of the more underrated movies out there. It is fast paced, entertaining and funny. And above all it was different and original. It was a great parody of the modern media hungry America we live in and was somewhat ahead of its time. The documentary style that invades the film is not unlike the Youtube reality we see today, and it makes the film seem less outrageous and more plausible.Sure the premise was a bit far fetched, and the love story a bit unrealistic.....but if you can suspend belief the movie is a lot of fun.Charlie Sheen is great as the wrongly convicted escapee, a role that he did not really have to stretch for but still he was excellent if understated. Kristy Swanson was at her best IMO as the abducted millionaire's daughter, she was annoying and at the same time sexy. You just had to love her.But the "supporting" star of the movie is without a doubt Henry Rollins. He plays the well-intended but power-tempted lead police officer so well it is scary. Rollins is funny and entertaining the whole time. He makes you really see into the plight of what the modern cop is facing from many angles. The other supporting roles, in which many famous people are sprinkled in from Carey Elwes to rockers Flea and Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but all roles are really well done and satire rich.I would say those just looking for some high octane entertainment with a thick dose of satire and parody mixed in would like this movie.
The way I see it, Adam Rifkin was able to write a very interesting script for some kind of action comedy and media satire, but, when it came to it, wasn't able to direct it properly. (Be aware that 1994 was the year of 'Nature Born Killers' as well as 'Pulp Fiction'... - And money, I suppose, was not the problem.) Charlie Sheen, both executive producer and main actor, must either not have understood the script at all, or been having way too much faith in Mr. Rifkin's directing skills. Interesting script gone wrong. Crap, with a few car chase / crash scenes that are well done and IMHO entertaining but can not really make up for it, and nor can Henry Rollins or anything/anybody else. Don't waste your time.
The writer needs an editor. At one point, it's suggested that there was blood at the murder which didn't correspond with Sheen's character's blood type, and would have exonerated him had it not been thrown out by poor police investigative work. Huh? Any one with a modicum of legal knowledge (like watching TV, for crying out loud) would realise that faulty police work only results in evidence being excluded for the prosecution's case. The defense wouldn't ever object to evidence which was exculpatory in nature, rather than inculpatory.Perhaps they just sent him to jail for poor acting and serial abuse of girlfriends and intoxicants?
