Blood: The Last Vampire
On the surface, Saya is a stunning 16-year-old, but that youthful exterior hides the tormented soul of a 400-year-old "halfling". Born to a human father and a vampire mother, she has for centuries been a loner obsessed with using her samurai skills to rid the world of vampires, all the while knowing that she herself can survive only on blood like those she hunts.

This movie is the proof that the world is becoming a sick and dumb place
A lot of fun.
There are better movies of two hours length. I loved the actress'performance.
The first must-see film of the year.
The story is based on the much acclaimed animae Blood. Being based on that and not have read the animae I can't really go into some issues. For example, the way the showed blood is done mostly with the use of CGI and in a special way. So if that's how it was shown in the book than it's okay. Some will hate it because monsters are done in CGI and weren't that good sometimes, it reminded me of Van Helsing and Legion were too many CGI tear the movie down. Still, they tried to kept the gore in it with real effects and the use of CGI. Of course the fights are done in Asian way, a bit like The Matrix. But that's so typical for Asian flicks. But the story enjoyed me and I was attracted to the screen the whole time. The use of English and Eastern language made it even more realistic. I liked it but I can understand that some will hate it due the CGI.
I'd say that, if you never saw the original and enjoyed it, you'd probably enjoy this movie more. Obviously, you won't be bothered in comparing and complaining about the movie throughout the movie. Yes, the CGI is a common thing in the movie as well as additions to the original story. The script is the one thing that hinder the movie experience. Even if pop movies is what you like, there are many cues in the story that are familiar from other movies that bother me. It tries to deepen the story from it's original, but its trite.Photography is so-so, but the fighting scene in the ally was very good. I felt that the main character is a soft version of the original. The original Saya never felt that protecting humans was a major thing. If any humans were around her battling a vampire, their safety was secondary to the primary goal, kill the vampire. But in this, Saya is more of a hero than a force. As a fan, it's not the Anime movie we love, but it's OK as a remake.
I have never seen the anime series, if it is a series or an animated film. I remember seeing the trailer for this movie a while ago, thinking 'wow that looks so cool, gotta see it!'. I have a soft spot for Asian style martial arts with all the flying around Crouching Tiger style as it brings a fantasy into reality on the screen. This movie is simply entertainment face value. The main heroine, I felt gave a decent performance as Saya who brings a beauty and one of those kick ass don't mess with me be warned type of charisma to the character. Her English is decent. The additional character of Alice is more of an annoyance and is simply there to add that whole emotional support in helping Saya be 'more human' and also is there to act as the damsel in distress. The special effects - well sometimes they were alright and sometimes it was a bit laughable. There is too much style used in this movie, and too many cuts, slow mo's that it felt very artificial; though I guess for a film like this it goes for style over substance. The final demon, Onigen, Saya's arch nemesis, is beautiful, played by Japanese actress Koyuki, but her English was a bit difficult to hear sometimes, and I had to find myself paying extra attention to what her threats actually were which reduced the credibility of her as a villain. The climatic fight scene or confrontation felt a bit rushed, which was disappointing considering that scene was really visually eye popping.I should probably watch it again and just enjoy the ride, but that feeling that there could have been a lot more done still resides.
Snuffing Marines on OkinawaI am absolutely amazed at how vital the vampire meme is. It ranges from deeply sexual expression to a generic stand-in for the "other" against which you do battle. In this project, it is so generic it is pushed aside so that sharper archetypes can be brought to the fore. Here we have a Japanese Buffy, though I assume her character predates that TeeVee show. She is a 400 year old samurai master in a 15 year old body. The plot has her in a Japanese sailor school uniform. She battles evil ninja zombies, sometimes as lumbering zombies, sometimes as flying beasts, and sometimes as ordinary sword-wielding masked ninjas. The disparately is not explained, nor does it seem to need to be.This was made before Japan announced a major re-arming of its military, so there is an odd setting of the story. They wanted military gear and your typical stupid general. So they set this on an American military base in Japan. This allows some background guys, gaijin with dark suits that act like Matrix types. This alien overlap: Americans in Japan and Vampires in the world, should not be lost on us. A nitwit American (girl) is assigned as sidekick.Nor is the girl-woman business. Turns out that the master vampire is revealed to be her mother, who she angrily kills. I do not know the amine on which this is based. Usually the nubile sexuality of the young girls are the whole point. That sailor uniform is such a strong indicator that the profound modesty of the girl here is shocking. The body shape is completely hidden in a skirt below the knees with a blouse buttoned to chin. There is no body display at all which makes me wonder who the target audience was. Nobody but preteen boys would be interested in this junk. She does have that smoldering look, head down, eyes raised with menacing knowledge of absolute control. Maybe the filmmakers figured that was enough.Ted's Evaluation -- 1 of 3: You can find something better to do with this part of your life.
