After his release from prison, notorious ex-con and moonshine distiller Gator McKlusky moves in with his father in a cabin in the Okefenokee Swamp. His bootlegging plans are cut short, however, when a federal agent tells McKlusky that he will lose custody of his 9-year-old daughter unless he helps bring down local crime lord Bama McCall. Fantastic!
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.
When I saw this, I was not aware it was a sequel. It just so happens I saw "White Lightning" on the same TV station a week later, after I had found out this was a sequel. So now I can compare the two movies. If I hadn't known Gator was a character from "White Lightning", I wouldn't have believed it. Gator in this movie was more like Burt Reynolds' "Smokey and the Bandit" character. In other words, Reynolds just being Reynolds, a smart aleck, though intelligent and charming. This movie was more fun but not as high quality as "White Lightning". Nevertheless, it did have its dark side. Although it started out with a "Dukes of Hazzard" style chase but with boats, and it was mostly a comedy, the final scenes were not funny at all. It was a real shame.Jerry Reed did a very good job; Bama did come across almost like J. R. in most of his scenes with Gator, though in a lot of his scenes Bama was hardly a J. R. Ewing type. He was just plain nasty, and that one scene that nearly spoiled the movie for me was the real proof of just how evil he was. The standout performance came from Alice Ghostley as a woman who loved cats and once worked in the courthouse. Her former job meant she knew where to find information that could put Bama away--but because it was her former job, illegal tactics had to be employed. Of course they did! What fun would a movie like this be otherwise? It's mostly a movie for the type people who enjoyed "Smokey and the Bandit". Too silly for Oscar, but entertaining.
The movie Gator is full of action. As with many Burt Reynolds movies the cops are once again practically useless. The standout is Jerry Reed as Bama McCall. Jerry Reed takes his role and runs with it till their is nothing left. The evil laugh and twinkle in his eye only adds to his portrayal. The bar scene with Bama, Gator, Bones and Smiley is a 10 easily. If you enjoy Burt Reynolds you will like this movie, however I hope you will walk away with a new appreciation for Jerry Reed. I really got a kick out of the 70's suits Mr. Reed wore. Classic. The opening motorboat scene is done well, but you can see the stunt men instead of the main actors. Lauren Hutton is sweet and there seemed to be some chemistry between her and Burt. Great acting, morality play and Jerry Reed, what more could one ask for?
Gator, the sequel to White Lightning was a lot more intense that the first. Both dealt with Gator battling corrupt officials, but this one deals with him battling his best friend. Though prison life didn't seem to faze him too much, but a sense of moral was put into this movie as well as his sense of charm. Anyone can find a person more annoying than Gator himself. At least it shows that temptation isn't Gator's cup of tea, or whiskey that is! At the end, the question for Gator is, "what's next?" Lauren Hutton was great at having her shirt charmed off, and Alice Ghostley of Bewitched fame did well. I really enjoyed it. 4 out of 5 stars.
This movie might of been stupid to some people. I think it was funny. The part where Burt notices this pretty lady and it plays that love music. Also it was funny when Jerry gave Burt yellow pills in his drink. Burt started acting drunk. It was good comedy. Jerry played a good role as Bama though. I watched Smokey and the Bandit and Jerry was just a happy, relaxed person. In this one, he was much more evil and like a pimp. He did a really good job but didn't get enough credit though. They should've put him in more movies like this.
