Fantastic!
The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
Most – supposed – 'thrillers' tend to rely on high-octane stuff to try and keep their audiences on the edge of their seats. However, 'Nothing But the Truth' tends to shy away from this, choosing instead to just tell quite tense story – without anyone ever really being in much of a tense/life-threatening situation. It tells the (almost true) story of a journalist (Kate Beckinsale) who 'outs' a CIA operative in her newspaper. Naturally, the government isn't too happy about this and demands that she reveals her 'source.' She refuses and must suffer the consequences, or buckle. The other thing that's worth noting is that Kate Beckinsale probably gives her best performance to date. I've seen more than a few scathing comments online about how she 'can't act.' Hopefully, if people watch her in this, they may just choose to reconsider and see her as more than just a vampire-huntress in leather.Like I say, there's no real 'action' or thrills, i.e. people being stalked through creepy locations. However, it is pretty tense. You will care about the characters and what happens to them. Plus it isn't a short film. If you want to watch this, you'll need nearly two hours of talking/tension to sit through. But, if you're in the mood for that, you'll find yourself rewarded with a rae thriller of the type that Hollywood doesn't make many of these days.http://thewrongtreemoviereviews.blogspot.co.uk/
I consider myself to be a harsh movie critic especially when it comes to endings. The ending to this movie sucked. You spend all that time watching and sitting on the edge of your seat and for what? You already knew everything there was to know in the first hour and by the end of the movie nothing had changed other than the revelation of her source. After the first hour or so I began to think that the source was on their death bed when they told her their story but no it was a their own daughter. She looses everything within the first hour and for what? Just to rub it in her face at the very end? Seriously, one of the last scenes is her pretty much telling her son good bye cause she's settling for prison for the next 2 years and the source and the end. This movie was everything BUT the truth. This woman ruined lives all around her and there is NOTHING entertaining about it!
After a Presidential assassination attempt, he orders an attack against Venezuela. Columnist Rachel Armstrong (Kate Beckinsale) writes that the President ignored CIA operative Erica Van Doren (Vera Farmiga) when ordering the attack. The media descends on Erica and her life is turned upside down. The government moves to force Rachel to name her secret source. She refuses and is jailed for contempt.Of course, it's a ripped-from-the-headlines kind of story. They make sure to say that this is fictional. Writer/director Rod Lurie does a reasonable job but this has a bit too much TV movie feel. Maybe he should have not copied so much from the headlines. There are big enough actors involved but it needs big cinematic flourishes. I won't give any spoilers, but I do love the big reveal at the end.
Definitely Kate Beckinsales best role. I've seen her in Underworld, Pearl Harbour and much more, but this is her best one. Vera Farmiga also plays wonderful, except Matt Dillon. He looks kind of bored in the whole movie.Good Story, good acting and an ending which is OK. There are just some little things, where I can say, that they were bad. The acting of Matt Dillon, which I have mentioned before. The ending, which isn't lame, but it is really predictable. And the boring David Schwimmer, which is as boring as hell. Nothing special, but more than good.7 out of 10 for Nothing but the Truth
