i must have seen a different film!!
It's not great by any means, but it's a pretty good movie that didn't leave me filled with regret for investing time in it.
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
For one time that an American movie shows a bit of originality, it's finally destroyed by an awful production ! First, it's a acid comedy about faith which is always helpful for the audience instead to be brainwashed by silly blockbusters. In addition, for a french guy like me, it's a real opportunity as french producers just don't wan't to do movies about this kind of movies ! Next, all the characters are finely fleshed and the casting has found some great names to play them : Jennifer, cool and cunning James Bond n°5, grumpy Ed Harris and other known faces Next, the thematic and its players are synthesized into a crazy story, full of surprises and funny twists !Unfortunately, all this is lost in the production ! Like most American movies since 2010, this one abuses the famous ugly Blue / Orange color scheme ! The cinematography relies on those two disgusting choices and the props and wardrobes used them too. So we are left with a smurfs movie or too much tanned people living in a blue / orange world ! It's everywhere, every time for everything or everyone and the pleasure a good « Technicolor » movie is gone ! Thus, it's a pity that such bad taste is left unnoticed as it's become an anti-watching tool that kills too many good movies !
There are too Few Movies like this and it is a Shame when one comes along with such a Stellar Pedigree that has no Faith in its Dark Satire. From the Book by the Author of Wag the Dog and the Director of the Documentary Hell House (2001) and a Cast sent from Heaven, this Ends Up being a rather Lame and Forgettable Hellhound with No Bite.It Waivers from Dark Comedy to Light Comedy to Semi-Thriller and never really finds its Place. It is not all Bad but not all that Good. Christian Fundamentalists will find it Offensive, Obviously, but there really isn't Anything in this Misfire that is that Offensive.Worth a View for what might have been, but the Subject Matter that it Targets is too Soul Saving Serious not to Poke Harder with all that Talent. In the End it is just too Light to be the Dark Comedy it Pretends.
This is one of those films that don't appear much on paper and you watch when you have exhausted all other avenues. I had never heard of the film and it appears to have had a very limited cinema release. I therefore wasn't expecting much. I was surprised as the cast list which boasts an impressive array of talent. Pierce Brosnan, Jennifer Connolley, Greg Kinnear, Marisa Tomei and Ed Harris are all quality actors and it would take a particularly bad script for this to be a turkey. This is a dark comedy and it doesn't always work, the plot is pretty flimsy and at times especially early on it drags a bit but once it hits its stride there are plenty of dark comedic moments as Greg Kinnear (an excellent performance) goes on the run. This film probably won't be anything you haven't seen before but it is pretty entertaining and worth at least one watch.
The movie wasn't as good as the subject matter. Sure it has great actors, Greg, Marissa, Jennifer & Ed but the person who got me stuck was the daughter. I watched it on a morning I wasn't feeling well, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Afterwards it left me wondering all day who was the actress playing the daughter? I'd recommend it to a non-deeply religious friend. It's definitely worth a lot of thought, especially for those that have questions. It is a satire comedy that follows the theory that a terrible thing can happen to a nice person. How a guy can be so ignorantly attached to a family that has a very small grip on reality. I know people like Jennifer & her dad's character's; those that don't want to believe and who replace fantasy with reality. I don't blame them, life can be really hard.
