Very disappointing...
Fantastic!
It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
She deserves to live a life as a prostitute? Just to survive? Let herself beaten and tortured? And spend great deal of money on drugs, that she can mentally resist this way of life? I think these are the questions posed by this film, visually. That, in conjunction with the first part of the film. Then, I wonder what audience can have this film, who are those who are watching something like this and movies like those in the "The Human Centipede" series or those Japanese films such as "Grotesque" and many others? I understand the need for porn, for single people or people who want more sexual arousal. But who and for what are needed such films like this one? Who is more disturbed in his brain, the insane character who kidnaps the prostitute, or the director of the film? I am aware that we live in a increasingly mentally ill world. And I'm against burning books or to blow vinyl discs. But, DVDs and any other support with such films should be destroyed.
(Contains spoilers) There is a self-destructive female prostitute. There is a male sadist. The male sadist kidnaps the female and tortures her. That is all.Really, that's it.A film which contains only these 3 things could inspire the viewer to ponder the horror experienced by the victim, or the motivations and nature of the abuser. This film, however, does not. It is actually difficult to make torture boring. Humans are hard-wired for empathy (research mirror neurons if you are curious) and even fictional imagery of other humans in tortuous situations will normally cause some sort of reaction in the viewer. This film does not. The abuser and victim both are hollow. They fill their roles as if punching a clock. They are as bored as the audience. The abuser has no desire to abuse or to stop abusing. The victim has no desire to stop suffering or to continue to suffer. They are void. Though human in shape, there is no humanity in either. The film might as well be two machines screeching and banging against each other.
I actually believe this movie to be a little better than many other reviewers have given it credit to be. Maybe most people haven't dredged through the cesspool of horrible movies that I have. This film really brought to mind a death metal video; a death metal video that had been shot and never edited down to the five minutes of really pertinent material. Imagine splices of Cannibal Corpse bobbing their heads during certain parts of the flick and you'll totally get what I'm laying down. As far as this movie being classified in the torture porn genre, it's is a far cry from being exceptionally graphic. Most of the violence is implied and cleverly by the end of the movie, you're tricked into thinking you just watched something a lot more visceral. I thought the acting was believable, contrary to many reviews. Not a lot of dialogue, but Renfro came off as pretty creepy. The biggest problem I had with this movie (other than the fact that it got a little tedious)was the two or three minutes of graphic material that actually qualified as graphic. There was no point in it. It added absolutely nothing to the film, except for some shock value that left me scratching my head. Why the hell even bother putting that in? I won't spoil it for all of you kids out there, but I almost think they were making two movies and got some cuts mixed up.This movie isn't bad, just a little artsy and dull. It's also two minutes of cutting away from being an easy R rating.
The Bunny Game is a horror film about a prostitute that is taken hostage by a truck driver. The first 20 minutes or so of the film shows the woman going around, taking drugs, wandering the streets, and the occasional mix of her in hotel bedrooms. I have no call to say what happens there. The thing about this woman is, in any scene, any damn scene, she just appears to helpless and even before being kidnapped is just so helpless. It's like no matter who she meets, they treat her like a piece of crap. After that, around 25 minutes of the 76 minute run time, the woman is then kidnapped and taken hostage by a nut job truck driver. The film here in, is just repetitive, boring, overly long and there's no suspense. There's no real story to it. It's just in your face: Here's a prostitute, here's her getting kidnapped and tortured. Watch. The majority of the film appears to be just inside the back of a truck, where she faces all sorts of terrors, and torture. The truck driver that has kidnapped her, doesn't really rape her as such, although there is obvious sexual elements. He appears to get his sexual enjoyment from just fondling and causing pain to her. He's definitely a sadomasochist. According to the documentary included with the DVD, the acting you see, apart from the drug taking and alcohol abuse, is all real: the woman is actually burned in several scenes, and dragged about. So if you're wondering, where does the name "The Bunny Game" actually fit in to the film, it's basically a scene where the truck driver gets a leather bunny outfit on and a bunny mask for his victim and dances about, shouting, yelling, and that's all. Oh, and he likes to run about the desert doing this too. He tells her "It's time to play The Bunny Game!" If any reason I give this film at LEAST 4 stars out of 10 it's because the truck driver is convincing in his role, and suited perfectly to act the nut job that he portrays. But even with that, the film in what it is trying to show is just way too long. The Bunny Game would have been better if they had of made it a short film. 76 minutes is short for a film, very short, but unfortunately, it's just too long to tell the story this film is trying to tell. It's over run, and the fast paced cutting makes you feel uneasy and confusing as to what is actually happening. In saying that, I think both the director and the actor that portrayed the truck driver, has good potential - if only it was used to create a proper horror film. The film itself is shot in black and white, and actually does not feel cheap when you're watching it. It is for the most part well made, just ... too repetitive and long. I think it might be interesting to see what this director throws at us next, but let's hope it has more substance to it than The Bunny Game has - because I truly believe he has some potential in there. The film could have excellent use in showing modern young women one thing: DON'T HITCH HIKE A RIDE, NO EXCEPTIONS!
