Crappy film
This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
I don't understand why this movie has such a low rating. I've seen it a couple of times because I really like it. I think it's absolutely worth watching if you like this genre.
A decent turn from Hawke, a few unintentional laughs, and an admittedly good point-of-view chase at the end are all this turkey has going for it. His wife kidnapped by ... someone vaguely explained, Ethan Hawke steals a car, gets stuck with Selena Gomez, and follows the driving instructions given to him by the mysterious voice on the phone. Cars crash, things blow up, and Selena whines and complains and shouts profanities endlessly, in her nasally sounding voice.Selena (who looks like a cross between a Bobblehead doll and a 15 year old brat kid) was grotesquely miscast in the co-lead role. She obviously is trying to move on to more mature roles, and there is nothing wrong with that, but her character here is a just nitwit rich kid trying to act tough, while throwing a tantrum and shouting profanities. Not much of a stretch there. She is too annoying for this to be "so bad it's good", but Ethan Hawke can't carry this poorly photographed (with dash-cams and the like) chase flick/ road movie/ buddy movie/ wannabe suspense flick.Only Hawke's character, and his wife are ever even given names, which makes this even more difficult to get involved with.A rare movie, in which the title is the filmmakers' command to the audience.
I expected something terrible from director Courtney Solomon ('Dungeons & Dragons'), but nothing this bad. 'Getaway' doesn't make the least bit of sense during its 90-minute runtime. You'd think that fast cars crashing into each other and destroying everything in their path would garner some thrills. Sadly, I was left bored beyond belief and laughing at this poor excuse for a movie. We follow Brent Magna (Ethan Hawke), a former pro race-car driver who comes home one afternoon to find that his wife has been kidnapped. A mysterious man (Jon Voight) phones and threatens to kill his wife unless Magna follows every instruction he gives. This involves driving a Shelby Mustang Super Snake that has been modified for Magna personally. The car now has bulletproof everything, all the technology you could want, reinforced steel and dozens of mini cameras inside and out of the car, so that the strange man on the other end of the phone can track Magna's progress through his "game."Right off the bat, the man has Magna drive through buildings and ice skating rinks where he's told to, "Hit everything you see or your wife will die." This doesn't bode well for the innocent bystanders, especially since it's Christmas Eve and there are tons of people out walking around, enjoying the city lights. Later, Magna is almost carjacked by "The Kid" (Selena Gomez), who it turns out owns the car that Magna is driving, which was stolen from her. Soon, the mystery man on the other end of line has both of them destroy the city in the Mustang.Oddly enough, the kid is a wiz at technology. With the click of a couple of buttons on her iPad, she hacks into government servers and the mystery guy's network to throw him off guard. She even figures out what his motivation is in this whole debacle. By the time it gets there, the climax makes absolutely no sense and makes us wish we had our 90 minutes back.Gomez and Hawke are the worst duo I've ever seen on camera. Their chemistry is awkward and awful. Gomez needs to attend acting school. She delivers each line with no real emotion or motivation. It's sad to see Hawke in something this bad. From the car driving through an exploding power plant, to evading several motorcycles with men wielding machine guns, nothing feels suspenseful or thought- out. The only decent part of 'Getaway' is that it uses real cars and real stuntmen to create the crashes and chases. If you enjoy watching close-ups of Jon Voight's mouth eating and drinking for 90 minutes, you might enjoy this ride. Otherwise, this film crashes and burns quickly.
Yes, there are spoilers ahead....stop reading if you haven't watched the movie yet.First off, I think the filming location was a poor choice. It was set in Bulgaria but it should have been set more appropriately in Switzerland.....mainly because there were more plot holes than a chuck of Swiss cheese. It's the little things that spoil the movie, for example:~The entire plan seemed a little bit elaborate and pointless. ~The car was armoured and unbreakable....until the last scene. ~Bulgaria must have an incredible back up generator, because for a city that lost its power grid and lights.....there seemed to be a lot of lights....and erm, power. ~What sort of high executive banker informs his daughter of the bank security arrangements if the power is lost? ~Apparently a race car driver is a crack shot with a pistol, unlike the bad guys with automatic weapons. The movie isn't THAT bad...you just need to leave your brain at the door prior to hitting the start button. If you want to see a lot of car chases and a bit of excitement then give it a go. Just don't expect "Die Hard" or "Ocean's Eleven"Oh, and what is it with keeping Jon Voight a secret and hiding his identity? Good grief, we ALL knew it was him, right from the get-go :P
