I love this movie so much
Simply Perfect
Powerful
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
Tenebre is a low quality foreign slasher type joke of a film, but has its entertainment value. The story and the acting are quite simply a zero score out of whatever scale you want to use and the murder scenes are extremely poor. It is basically a showcase of beautiful braless women, silly music and various locations and camera angles. Lara Wendel was particularly nice as Maria and I found myself amused enough not to trash the film completely. Though the many reviews of actual praise in film making, are absurd. Style no problem, thrilling mystery, gripping story and suspense, you've got to be kidding.
I watched this movie based on its reviews on IMDb, and i have to say, its the most disappointed I've been in a movie in a long time. How anyone can take this movie seriously is beyond me. The acting is beyond belief bad, its up there with the worse acting I've EVER seen in ANY movie. Come on, who can really take this seriously. It was also so obvious from the beginning that the author was going to be the murderer, doesn't take holmes or dick van dyke to figure this one out. I also found the music very annoying and not fitting with what was actually going on, add to that the dodgy attempts at being artistic with the camera and this really is an awful movie. I wasn't sure if it was a kind of comedy/ thriller at first. The acting is that bad, i didn't know if the viewer was even supposed to be taking this serious, but apparently you are. I love 80s movies, but this one is really dated and really painful viewing. I even found the toxic avenger more realistic. The best part of the movie was getting to see the girls knickers while she was getting chased by the cleverest dog on the planet. I suppose they had to throw that in just to try and keep some people watching.
"Tenebrae" is one of the best gialli. It's never anything other than trashily entertaining, and it doesn't stuff up the final twists as so many of these movies do. In this case, the final revelation is genuinely surprising, rather than merely confusing, and there are some chilling moments on the way there."Tenebrae" is also quite a bit more violent than most gialli. Sure, they always hint at violence of an absurd level, but actually don't tend to show all that much. "Tenebrae" has a scene, however ridiculous in its execution, that even hardened gorehounds would have to remember - the stump of the hacked off limb spraying blood over the wall, anyone?I guess, since this one was made in the '80s, Argento was allowing the American slasher craze to influence his movies and giving more gratuitousness to the violence, while keeping the sex and nudity. There's an equal helping of both, but more importantly, this giallo gem is entertaining from beginning to end.
I just got done watching this mess of a film and felt that I just HAD to write a review on it. Why does this film have such a high rating? The acting is horrible, the editing is rotten and the "twist" I figured out within the first fifteen minutes. Other users talk about how bloody this movie is and the amount of nudity is in it. I must have been watching a whole different version because the one I was watching had very little nudity and hardly any blood, except at the end, and a victim has her hand or arm cut off, not in the version I saw. I watched a version called Tenebre, not Unsane, on Amazon Prime and it said it was unrated but I think it was HORRIBLY cut. I have watched only one other Argento movie and that being Cat O'Nine Tails and that one was bad as well. I saw that this movie had such a high rating from viewers that I should give it a try. WRONG!!! I've seen better acted movies from Troma films. If this is what Italian Gallo is, I'll just stick to my American films.
