Such a frustrating disappointment
Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
The movie is not entirely terrible but it did feel entirely pointless. It mostly centers around a man who does disturbing things and that's basically it. The sheriff knows that he is up to something and tries to catch him. There didn't really seem to be any real story behind it. I didn't find myself caring about any of the characters in the movie at all. If you are seeing the movie because of James Franco, I would not bother because he is barely in the movie. I have no idea why he is listed as a star of the movie. His is a bit part at best. There were a couple of interesting points in the movie, but for the most part, it is definitely not a movie worth seeing at all. Definitely skip this one and see something else.
When me and my boyfriend saw this at the Redbox we thought it had some decent actors and sounded like it could be interesting so why not? We should have stayed away from this one, first reason being I felt the description was misleading. If the description had read **SPOILER ALERT** ""A deranged back woods necrophiliac finds friends in stuffed animals while sleeping around with dead back seat lovers" then perhaps it would have been accurate. Even "The 'No Country for Old Men' of West Virginia but with necrophilia" would have sufficed. This movie was deeply disturbing, but I can look past that as there are many disturbing movies that I don't feel wasted several hours of my life that I'll never get back. What really bothered me about this movie was the lack of an apparent plot line, or perhaps the movie was so freaking boring I couldn't concentrate on watching this movie long enough to pick up on it. Or maybe the author was only interested in writing hillbilly porn for men with fantasies of sleeping with dead lifeless corpses. I haven't read the book and after seeing this I certainly won't be. As a last note, I usually enjoy James Franco's work but after seeing this I'm never taking his involvement as a sign that a movie is worth watching again.
Unengaging and dull.A man lives on the fringes of society in a remote rural area. Over time his anti-social behaviour becomes more and more extreme, deranged and felonious.Despite the grittiness of the plot and some potentially controversial scenes, the movie feels quite empty. It's just a 100- minute walk-though of a few days in the life of an insane, feral person. There is no engagement with the lead character. We don't get his backstory, or any reason to empathise with him. So it just feels like a join-the-dots, blow-by-blow exercise with no point at all. While the script is based on a Cormac McCarthy novel, the movie is directed by James Franco, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Now you see where the problem lies... Turns out the only thing worse than James Franco's acting is his directing. On the plus side, while Franco does act in the movie, his role is quite small and has little screen time.
All-around "Renaissance Man", James Franco, directed and co-wrote this little period piece film based on the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy. Set in mountainous Sevier County, Tennessee, in the 1960s, "Child of God" tells the story of Lester Ballard, a dispossessed, violent man whom the narrator describes as "a child of God much like yourself perhaps." Ballard's life is a disastrous attempt to exist outside the social order of things. Deprived of parents and homes and with few other ties (after his parents die and he's kicked out of their home), Ballard descends literally- and figuratively- into that of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and just all-around degradation.Okay, I must say, with my wicked, dark sense of humor, I actually found this quite amusing at times. Scott Haze, who plays Lester, would just get these looks on his face, and speak in that hillbilly gibberish (sometimes I think purposely so others wouldn't be able to understand his madness-?? LOL) and I would just crack up! Overall, I really enjoyed this piece. It will be interesting to see where Franco's directing career will be at ten years from now..??
