Just intense enough to provide a much-needed diversion, just lightweight enough to make you forget about it soon after it’s over. It’s not exactly “good,” per se, but it does what it sets out to do in terms of putting us on edge, which makes it … successful?

What happens when a serial killer expert has to face off with the real thing? That's what happens when Dr. Helen Hudson (Sigourney Weaver, Alien) is cornered and attacked by a man she profiled, Daryll Lee Cullum (Harry Connick Jr.).For the next 18 months, Dr. Hudson is a recluse, refusing to leave her computer and high rent apartment, only allowing her friend Andy into her world. A new series of murders - right in her neighborhood - threaten to draw her out. Joining up with Inspector Monahan (Holly Hunter) and Rueben Goetz (Dermot Mulroney), she begins to realize that this killer is copying the world's worst serial killers. It also turns out that the killer is following the script she presented on the night that Cullum attacked her. Along the way, Rueben is killed in a police standoff and Monahan has to deal with her feelings of loss. After her friend Andy is killed like Jeffrey Dahmer, they figure out that the killer is Peter Foley. As the police get to his house, they realize that it was a ruse and he's kidnapped Helen, placing her back into the same crime scene she was in 18 months before. Will Monahan be able to save her friend? Will Dr. Hudson be able to deal with her crippled agoraphobia? This is a fine 90's crime drama, with Connick quite good in his role. Weaver has stated that of all her films, she was most proud of Copycat, as she worked hard to understand how an agoraphobic would behave and she's regretted that the movie is not better remembered.

Going into this, I had no idea what to think. I forget how and where I got introduced to this work of art but I am glad that I got around to watching it. It has a number of stars in it that all have their equal share of time and no one is in it more than the other. Before I begin, if you really want a suspenseful mystery that will leave you asking for more, this is certainly it.The movie begins with Dr. Helen Hudson (Sigourney Weaver) giving a speech at a college university and she get distracted when she supposedly sees Daryll Lee Cullum (Harry Connick, Jr.) in the audience and threatens her with a slashing across the throat gesture. She eventually gets back to business and finishes her lecture. She is then attacked by Cullum following the lecture and the police come in to stop him. Fast forward some time later where she's plagued by agoraphobia and she tries to calm herself after a nightmare that jolts her out of sleep. Then come Ruben Goetz and M.J. Monahan (Dermot Mulroney and Holly Hunter, respectively) who are called to a crime scene where the victim was strangled in the style of the "Boston Strangler."It is then they have to figure out the style of the killer before he/she kills any more people. As time wears on, the killer claims victims in the styles of the "Hillside Stranglers," "Son of Sam," and Jeffrey Dahmer...which is when things get too close to home when the killer makes Helen's assistant Andy one of his victims. After that, the police finally catch up to the "Copycat Killer" by the name of Peter Foley (William McNamara), who is nothing more than a lab tech who wants his 15 minutes of fame.Eventually Peter kills a couple more cops and then kidnaps Helen, which alerts the attention of M.J. The bold cop then finds Helen at the university where the initial attack took place with Daryll Lee. A fight ensues and Helen eventually breaks free and runs to the roof, completely forgetting about her agoraphobia. Peter saunters after her and tries to shoot her, only to be stopped by M.J....who eventually kills him.If you're not into the realm of serial killers, I advise you do some serious reading on them before you go into this movie. Even though the characters explain what the real killers have done, you will be better off knowing about them before they tell you. I guarantee that you will not regret it. Enjoy this gritty film and make sure you watch it on an empty stomach. There are some parts in here that may very well turn it if you're not used to it.

"Copycat" is a complex and exciting thriller from director Jon Amiel, a fast and sophisticated film about finding the truth, and dealing with the consequences along the way. The plot is well written, without over doing the action, and dealing with criminal masterminds on both sides of the law. Involving a serial killer stalking and strangling his victims, two cops and a psychologist who tries to track him down before he claims more lives with his demonic style execution. Ironically the psychologist happens to be on his very list of victims he kills for fun, thrill and power.Sigourney Weaver manages to portray a woman who is both strong and fragile. Harry Connick Jr., though playing a serial killer, is one of my favorite characters. He makes the most of his role and manages to stand out in the movie. With the lack of action, the film can lack at points, but the concept and the unknown identity of the criminal will keep you hooked, not to mention the shadow the serial killer casts over the central character Hudson. The film is dark, brooding and its ending is chilling in that Harry Connick Jr.'s imprisoned psycho is obviously going to continue his quest for revenge on Weaver. Also, the settings are well established, really diving deep into the mind of past serial killers and putting them into current society, which was shocking. The tension is high, the plot well presented and the acting is superlative.Overall rating: 8 out of 10.

I've seen this movie many times (even at the cinema), but not in a very long time.Brilliant Movie. Just brilliant. It's even better than I remembered. All the elements are here: Fantastic score by the amazing Christopher Young, great cinematography, great acting by the entire cast (especially Sigourney Weaver and Harry Connick Jr.), great direction. And the writing - it's just fantastic, it's obvious that the writers did a lot of research on serial killers; the plot is thrilling from the first minute to the last; The way they put together the characters, gave them background and then involved them in the plot - not just as a side instruments, but as part of the main plot - and the ending (with Helen participating in the role of herself in the recreation of the murder that changed her lief), it's just great.Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter are two of my favorite actresses. This movie is very underrated. I liked it from the first time I saw it at the cinema - and I recall I felt an actual thrill at the end scene, thinking that was the thrill I wanted to feel in "The Silence of the Lambs". The two movies share a lot in common. While Foster, Hopkins and Ted Levine gave a fantastic performance in "Silence of the Lambs", I always felt a bit disappointed by the movie, especially after it was given such high expectations. But "Copycat" did just that. Both movies deal with serial killers, have strong female lead actress(es), good score, great performances, an outsider "expert" who is locked and a serial killer who copycats other serial killers (well, in "Silence of the Lambs" he wasn't really a copycat, the writers just took elements from Ted Bundy and Ed Gein to build his character and actions). While "Silence of the Lambs" is considered a masterpiece, I have to say that I always enjoyed "Copycat" a lot more. I also never understood some of the motivations in "Silence of the Lambs", like the reason Hannibal is helping Clarice and trying so hard to "get inside her head", and certain plot points. This is the way you make an excellent thriller.
