Best movie of this year hands down!
Good concept, poorly executed.
Don't Believe the Hype
It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.
Jeff Goldblum is VERY SCARY in this role!! He is not his usually dork self (ie. Jurrassic Park and many others of this sort). He plays with confidence and shows just how intelligent he actually is. He is disturbingly frightful as he unfolds the reasons for his being there and also makes you want to see more. I had my doubts years ago when I saw this show. It did not help when I saw that it was a made for cable movie. Low and behold though it was REALLY REALLY REALLY good and they never played it again. Even the ending was great (and I cannot say that for many pictures I have seen). There was a definite beginning and ending with an interesting in-between. I rate this 5 stars!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I had a copy. I cannot find anywhere that rents it. Feel free to email me if you want. Really, YOU HAVE GOT TO SEE THIS MOVIE! On another subject of interest due to movies less seen....... I also saw a wild show once on late-night cable and cannot recall the name of it. It was about this dude who goes to Australia to get away from some people trying to kill him. He gets there and this HOT blonde starts jumping him. Then she smacks him over the head and he is trapped in her fathers village in the outback on a nuclear testing site and is forced to marry her. They destroy his van and somehow mix in a giant Kangaroo in the plot. I have looked but in vain for what this was called. If anyone knows PLEASE write me!!!! There is the line she asks him about "Parting the Beef Curtains one more time" right before she hits him. Funny as hell!!
Except for Jeff Goldblum all actors acted so badly that the originally interesting story turned into boredom. For example Kathy Baker: she often walks around without even showing a hint of a feeling in her face. And these haircuts: hilarious. But nothing compared to the music: a cheetah with a Hammond orgue would have done better. There is simply not a single second where suspense, horror, fear, fright or anything else is produced by this crappy film. You just see a mixture of bad music, actors, haircuts and dialogs floating around. I can only hope that another director with better actors, hairstylist and musical composer will turn this great story into a cinematographic masterpiece. It gets a 3 only because of Goldblum, otherwise it would be 1.
Ranks with THE FLY as Goldblum's greatest performance. He is mesmerising from his opening scenes with Alan Bates as the detective on a real mission impossible.Way too intelligent for most audiences of the new millennium, here in Goldblum's character and given the ring-melting sequence, there is no real enigma as to who he is - we have "cool" utterly personified.Awesome in its contemplation even - the Devil's reincarnation as a means to "renew the faith" as it were, Goldblum is hypnotic and absolutely commands attention and respect for every little nuance he projects in his time on screen. The end is only anti-climactic for the average "boofhead," who would more than likely have switched off long before the final reel anyway. It never was a question of "who won?" There ARE no winners! I have seen this film several times and only ever known it incidentally as "The Deadly Mister Frost" as is titled my own recently-acquired DVD copy.Rare and thought-provoking little gem.
I thought it was a good movie for the simple fact that it had Jeff Goldblum as the lead with the spotlight on him being sexy. The plot was not all that interesting, but the characters were. The whole movie seemed to be Jeff Goldblum saying "Look at me, I'm so hot and dangerous." Works for me.
