Well, not funny ha-ha but at least interesting. Your humble reviewer used to review films professionally (back when dinosaurs walked the earth) and also worked in Hollywood for a short term. Talking to an old friend (they are all old at this point) I mentioned that the biggest surprise and pleasure to me at my stage of life was discovering Japanese animation, and I had lately been watching a number of features and series, many in the original Japanese with subs, in fact. The friend asked, what is your favorite? I said, I was not sure. He then asked, which one would you want to see over, if you had a chance? My answer was this film, Appleseed. It is amazing at so many levels. The animation is to die for, especially the eyes. Wow. The story (in spite of the other reviews) is fine, and, as you may discover, a heck of a lot better than the official sequel. And I love the names. Brilliant. If I ever get another dog, I intend to name the animal either Deunan -- which sounds so wonderfully Scottish, it could be the next Mel Gibson movie -- or Briareos, which is one of the few names I can recall that sounds longer than it actually is. As you may have noticed, this is not a traditional review. But it is indeed as review. Astonishing film. I dare you to see it and not marvel at what is coming out of Japan.

Hi dear Anime-Fans, this comment does not contain spoilers.I have to tell You, Anime was never my No.1 movie priority, but I am open-minded and thanks to my curiosity I saw perhaps one of the best movies ever.As an old "Ghost in the Shell" - fan, I knew how the drill is in such movies, but be sure that Appleseed will definitely blow You away! It has amazing graphics, a story that puts You on an intellectual edge (simply describing the next moral hazard in the future), devastating action scenes and of course a beautiful Deunen (main character).I consider You to watch also "Appleseed 2 - Ex Machina", produced by John Woo, the graphic is MUCH better (yeah, thats possible!) but the story is not as good as in the first movie.I can tell You, I cannot stop looking these movies! :-) Greetings -V-

Fantastic piece of anime. This film has paved the way for new 3D anime films. The animation is fantastic. The characters all look human rather than looking like 90's computer characters. The opening sequence is absolutely fantastic and hooks the viewer immediately. The other action sequences that are throughout the rest of the film are good as well. The mechanical design is great and they look incredibly realistic. Weapon design is also great as is the transport. The music throughout the film does create contrast and changes the mood of the scenes. I especially liked the action sequence music. However, even though the film is great, there are some bad things about it. The shading on characters is not natural enough and the translation is not perfect. You may also need to watch the film a couple of times to fully understand the depth of the story, which isn't such a bad thing as you get to appreciate the film more when watching it again. Appleseed is a great piece of animation that has paved the way for new 3D CG films. An amazing and state of the art film. 10/10

After seeing a trailer for this film, I thought to myself "that looks amazing, I have to go see it!" I was lucky and got the opportunity to watch it in Japan when it was cinematically released in 2004.Visually, it is a real treat - like nothing else I had ever seen. I'd recommend it for this reason alone. The action sequences are stunning, and the way characters subtly move even when they are not the focus of attention is just amazing. The plot..? Well, for me it just tries too hard to be 'deep' and it contains a lot of clichés that have already been used by some of the 'deeper' anime efforts of recent years. That's not to say it is bad, but seasoned anime watchers will definitely feel a sense of deja vu. Indeed, the opening sequence where the lone female in a derelict city is rescued by a team of hi-tech soldiers is hugely reminiscent of the opening from 'Final Fantasy Spirits Within', another movie that tried too hard to be intellectual and came across as just dense.Overall, I would say watch it for the amazing visuals. It's a landmark piece of animation. The dense and overambitious plot does pull it short of being a classic, but that's a criticism that could equally be levelled at a lot of other films that would be less worthy of your time.
