Sadly Over-hyped
Good story, Not enough for a whole film
This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
25 years later, four former college buddies rent a place, get together and do an outrageous amounts of alcohol and drugs. They remember about other times they got together and partied and then about their personal failures, although I would have swapped places with at least two of them. Then PLOT SPOILER they start to kill themselves based on some old nearly forgotten 25 year old pact they signed when they were all stoned. It really did seem stupid. Some dark comedy moments.The whole film was miscast. This should have been a Tarantino production with a neat sound track and James Franco, Gary Busey, Woody Harrelson, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, and /or Samuel L. Jackson. Then add some dark decent dialogue with biting flashbacks. This was an opportunity missed for a cult classic.Guide: F-word and nudity.
I was expecting a lot more because of the ''omg this film was awesome'' reviews displayed on here.The movie included a few nice songs.The cinematography is very good,that made it more easy to watch but still,like I always say: stay away from the ''kids know how to party'' teen flicks and it's all good...Why? because that stuff gets old after 10 minutes,and even more when that's the only thing it has to offer to the audience.Points to be mentioned 1:Four old men reunited go on a drug trip,recycled situations/images of other movies. 2:Sasha Grey trying to act(topless). 3:Some funny lines. 4:Great cinematography (I voted 3 stars just for this) ...snd there,you got a movie!Maybe some teenagers will enjoy it because of the drug use,the somehow pretentious I'm a rebel mood and the couple of cute baby gurls,but still you're not losing anything good.
I expected a lot from this movie given the cast but was sorely disappointed. The basic premise is so juvenile as to be unbelievable in 4 adult men, regardless of their problems. The suicides/deaths are so overwrought and seem to be staged to try and lure the viewer into some kind of sympathy with these guys. Didn't work for me at all. It's hard to care about these characters in any way. Perhaps if more attention had been paid to the back story, it would have made the seemingly stupid pact more believable. Unless it's supposed to be a metaphor. Which would make it even worse, if that's possible.A little subtlety might have gone a long way to helping but Thomas Jane shamelessly overacts through the entire movie and the others aren't much better in it. Don't waste your time with this one.
No idea why people are bitching about the strangest things with this film. It's well written, good original dialogue and a new story. It is a film of two halves, but both are high quality.It's actually quite fresh. The shooting style is different, I read reports here about them using Canon DSLR cameras. It's a lovely look I think, lots of fresh angles, fresh looks, fresh effects.Can't complain about the cast, excellent selection of likely suspects.In summary: a gritty drama, well worth your time. Not the typical Hollywood feast at all. Look forward to seeing what else these guys make.
