As Good As It Gets
How many times have you seen the words, 'Based on a true story,' at the beginning of a Hollywood film? Normally, when that's written, what you see on screen is about as far away to what actually happened as you can possibly get. However, 'Fire in the Sky' is almost quite close to what really happened (obviously, if you believe what the story is all about).Travis Walton was a logging worker in 1975 who, while up in the mountains, was abducted by a flying saucer right before his co-workers' eyes. This is the account of what happened. One criticism is that it heavily favours the account of Walton and his co-workers, over those sceptical of their fantastical claim. However, when you think about it, Fire in the Sky would have been a pretty dull film if all that happened was Travis decided to hide in the woods for a few days while his mates made up crazy stories about what they've seen. This is a great film - kind of like a 'real life' episode of the X-files. And, you can enjoy it on two levels: if you're a 'Mulder' and believe in aliens, UFOs etc, you can look at it as a documented account of what actually happened. However, if you're a 'Scully' (i.e. a sceptic) then you should be able to enjoy it by simply seeing it as a good piece of dramatic science-fiction.Either way, if you're into sci-fi or drama, you should quite enjoy it. It's also worth looking into further - the real Travis Walton wrote quite a comprehensive book on the subject matter and there's plenty of 'evidence' to back up his claims if you do some research on the internet.
I came across this movie on several top lists while on the hunt for some good alien abduction/horror movies and with a fair bunch of likable actors I decided to give it a shot. While it might not contain some of the classic "pillow in your face" scary moments there are certainly parts that are somewhat unsettling and eerie. With some solid acting and decent special effects this movie still holds up very well for being more than 20 years old by now and I thoroughly enjoyed it.If you are a fan of alien abduction/mystery movies I would sincerely recommend watching this movie.
I must have gone thru Netflix sci-fi section for tens of times and never really finding anything worthwhile to watch. I've either seen them all or the rest just don't light a spark. I've looked at this title for many many times without even thinking of watching it, I've never heard of it and the cover looked a tad cheap.Yesterday I noticed it's got a pretty nice cast, big names in it and I'm quite fond of 90's flicks at the moment.. why not give it a go. I was dragged into it quite quick, very interesting, well made beginning. The movie went on and I was totally hooked and I found myself thinking "why haven't I heard of this movie before". I know movies, it's not often I run into an older movie that has somehow slipped my eye and still be worth looking at, but this is one of those. This really is.The movie has an interesting story, it's very (and I mean very) well acted and the direction is on par with many bigger name directors. I don't know why this guy doesn't have more movies under his resume. He seems to have been quite active on TV tho. I've never been that big a fan of Robert Patrick, but he is great in this movie. Great performance, I must say I look at this man in a completely different light from now on. DB Sweeney on the other hand was miscast in my opinion. Not that he doesn't do a good job, but he's a bit of a comedian in my eyes and a bit of a goofy one at it. In some dramatic scenes he looked a bit funny twisting his face, even tho he did quite a good job most of the time.I'm not quite sure if this movie was ever even released in Finland when it was new, it may be that it was completely overlooked. The story is something that might not appeal to a big audience tho, it's quite a lot on the drama side and the characters are 70s "regular people", not Fox Mulders or Men in Black. Anyway, despite the movie being mostly character driven drama, it's got one of the most striking alien scenes I've seen on screen, I was genuinely horrified and really not expecting anything like it. It was a bold choice from the writers and director to combine such strong drama to a more - how should I say it - mainstream appealing scene. It's a weird combo, but works like a charm here.Don't miss this.
Interesting UFO abduction story. Based on real life incidents involving the real Travis Walton. D.B. Sweeney plays Walton and does a credible job. As does Robert Patrick as Walton's brother-in-law,Mike Rogers. Craig Sheffer and Peter Berg are OK in their brief roles but Henry Thomas (E.T.) and Bradley Gregg as wasted in theirs. As is the lovely Kathleen Wilhoite as Roger's wife. But it was nice to know they are in the background. The late great Noble Willigham was excellent casting as the sheriff who wants to believe the boys of the UFO story but just can't. James Garner also did very good in his sleazy/slimy role as the investigator trying to get the boys to just fess up and confess they killed Travis and stop lying with the so-called UFO story.I was surprised to see a actor of the name of Robert Covarrubias in the role as a persistent news reporter. Nice. I last remember him from Boulevard Nights(1979)(his debut) as a local rival homeboy from the barrio. Another actor I know but really did not see (because his role was so minimal!) was Peter Mark Vasquez.(Colors,Blood In-Blood Out) All in all a good film. Highly recommended.
