Yawn. Poorly Filmed Snooze Fest.
Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast
The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
A seriously stupid movie. What writer thought talking about porn and masturbation in front of your young daughter was a clever pick-up line? Rent "Return to Me" or "Fools Rush In" instead. 3/22/06
SPOILER ALERT!!! I'm going to tell you about the ending.Former NYC exec passes on the chance to get a fantastic job doing what he loves, one that would allow him to give his daughter a good life and things like a college education, in order to continue picking up garbage because of a chat he had with a movie star who tells him that if he were "smart he'd be home playing in the dirt with his kids." We're expected to believe this. Seriously.Ben Affleck's character is all over the place, all the way up to the sad looking suit he wears to the job interview he'd asked someone else to set up for him - and for which the person had to work hard to get!Oh, please.
Jersey Girl I think is an average movie. Definitely not one of my favorites, but at the same time not the worst movie I've ever seen. The plot of the movie is well thought out and is a good idea for a movie. Ben Affleck who plays Ollie Trinke is a Manhattan music publicist. He later meets the girl of his dreams and she becomes pregnant. However, his life completely changes when she dies while giving birth. He moves back in with his father in New Jersey to raise his daughter, Gertie, by himself. This movie has emotion and drama, but also comedy at the same time. This film is heartwarming because of the way Ollie Trinke steps up to be the best dad he can be. He really ends up caring for his daughter after getting thrown a curve ball of becoming a single dad. This would be a great family movie.
Jersey Girl written and directed by Kevin Smith and starring Ben Affleck, a longtime Smith collaborator, stars as Ollie Trinke, a Manhattan publicist who must abandon the big city and move back to his hometown in New Jersey when his wife (Jennifer Lopez) dies giving birth to their new daughter and he loses his job after a very public and embarrassing meltdown. Within later we see where the film cuts to seven years later, as Ollie grapples with daughter Gertie (Raquel Castro), his wisecracking, tough-love dad (George Carlin), and an unfulfilling career filling in potholes. Seven years later is an uneasy transition, it turns out: After the first act's heavily waterworks premise, the audience is primed for a character transformation film, but all that transforming takes place in the seven years that pass without a camera fixed on it. Instead, the conflict of the piece comes from Ollie's stop-and-start re-entry into the romantic fray and his attempts to get a foothold back in the publicity business. The love interest comes by way of a snappy grad student named Maya, played by Liv Tyler, the largely flatline Jersey Girl happily skips a beat when the charming and sly Tyler enters the picture, so full of promise and toothy grins is she. What made it in disbelief is the way her character is very demanding and interesting into Affleck (even after he tells her about his wife's incident). Her character was completely unlikable and did not feel very real. After their very first meeting at the video game story, she seems interested without knowing much of his story. So much so, that later on she visits his house late at night just to tell him how sorry she is, then she offers to take him out on a date. Perhaps she lived close to him, but couldn't she have simply called him? It seemed very stalker-ish in hindsight, and if the gender roles were reversed, more people would have mentioned it.There is also a running gag throughout the first half of the film with Will Smith's name brought up. This was taken place in 1994 & 1996 when Smith was still on the Fresh Prince and wasn't the movie star he would later become (a reference to Independence Day- 1996 film being released is mentioned so we are to believe this was taken in 1996). I believe they made too much of a big deal out of this but it wasn't that big of a problem. Only to find out later on in the film where we get to see Will Smith as an actually cameo (where he discusses his current situation with Affleck and Affleck takes his words to heart doing what Smith is implying). Jersey Girl was a massive flop at the box office and a film which further hurt Ben Affleck's career (also Kevin Smith's), though they were both able to make it out within the later years. Overall I can see why some praise this film, as it is a more different and emotional take from Kevin Smith, as I can see why this film has received its share of backlash. It's an average film, depending on your taste, and most definitely not one of Kevin Smith's best film.
