Such a frustrating disappointment
It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.
It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.
Clever satirical comedy. Basically a stream of independent skits. Each skit is a clever parody of everyday life, particularly the media. Screamingly funny.
To start, I am a fan of some slapstick and parody movies. I would gladly re-watch a Leslie Nielsen movie for the 10th time, but this is really not even close. Most of the humor is heavily "under the belt" and plain unfunny. That said, I did like a few moments and ideas, but the constant change of sketches just kills everything. It's provocative, racist, disgusting, a real B movie. Surely, you may enjoy it in a good company after a few beers, but I rather spend 90 minutes watching cat videos on Youtube.
Onion Movie reminds me of, and even has things in common with, John Landis' Amazon Women On The Moon. one legacy shared is both films sat on the shelf (alright, different shelves) for a few years before lucky enough to get released. Rodney Dangerfield appears in this film, posthumously, owing to this. i'll admit there were a few bits here that went nobly towards redeeming the remaining junkyard of comedy discards. like "armed gunman thwarts armed gunman", just to emphasize i actually watched it. for maximum, if any, viewing pleasure see Onion Movie alongside whatever rowdy inebriated crowd you can invite over this Saturday night
Although I get the point and nature of the comedy and the satire this movie uses, it seemed such a hopeless attempt. I barely laughed, the jokes are unfinished, unstudied and not ironic enough. This movie expects too much from itself, and there are far too many examples of how this type of humor should be used and understood, that "onion movie" just seems to have a lot of growing up to do. It's just some "scary movie" kind of jokes placed in some sort of smart comedy release wannabe. Some friends of mine praised it so much that I probably expected too much also; I'll just have to talk some sense into them and tell them that profound and kind-of-painful humor and irony go much higher than saying that music videos these days are almost porn. The acting was bad too; probably they believed it would add to the satire...
