Very disappointing...
It's entirely possible that sending the audience out feeling lousy was intentional
The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
Ignore the listed title, this is actually Hackers 2, the supposed sequel to the Johnny Lee Miller film. It's actually nothing of the sort. It's not a sequel which is one of the reasons the Hackers 2 eventually slipped from the title and it became known as Takedown. It's a good film from the science & technology aspects. If you enjoyed Hackers or Sneakers you'll most likely find some interest in this. It's more technical and there's a lot of plot to follow.Personally I enjoyed it but it could have stood alone without the link to the original Hackers movie. The cast are mainly unknowns (to me at least) the hacks are very good to watch, and the plot does follow a decent enough logic.Worth it if your into computers.
The technologies used and shown in the movie are accurate. This movie is much better then Hackers where ridiculous 3D and CGI are passed off as hacking. As a fellow geek I enjoyed watching this. We all know that Kevin is innocent, so basing your viewing experience on the fact that your watching something based on a true story is absurd. I found myself relating on many levels with Skeet's character, Kevin. The idea's and philosophies correctly portray the ideals of many hackers, even today. Information does belong to the world. This movie gets it right in the sense that it shows the perspectives that most hackers share. This movie is worth owning and is a must have for any geek or information security professional.
To be honest I watched this film purely for the fact that I am very interested in Hacker Culture/History.. and to my dismay, this film is far from the truth. However it does have its good sides.. it's portrayal of hacking itself and of people with an over-enthusiastic interest in computing for one. Where other hacker-orientated Hollywood movies show flashy tron-like graphics to depict gaining root on a system, Takedown shows you how it is. And the other good thing about this movie is just that... its a movie. If you ignore the fact that the majority of its plot is based on biased views from people who either disliked Kevin, or never even knew him, it's watchable. It contains all the aspects of a Hollywood movie that grab the viewer.. an original topic, a fast moving storyline, a so-called criminal that you really feel sorry for, an unjust American legal system, and a so-called victim who is just as bad as the depicted criminal. If you can easily switch off, this film is for you, but if you care about freedom of information, moral values and the fact that everyone has the right to a fair trial... go watch Freedom Downtime.
I feel compelled to first respond to everyone who can't get over the fact that this is a work of fiction. It's written by a biased party and I imagine underwent hollywood sensationalism. There certainly are a few little elements that arguably smack of a USA Original hacker movie, but I find these for the most part to be hackishly appropriate or reasonable hollywood compromises, so I don't see why anyone would be terribly upset. There's something called suspension of disbelief and most people at some point or another have to apply it to enjoy something. As for the film itself, I give it a solid B across the board. The acting and writing were pretty good. When Ulrich says "just have to know" and "because he can", it is easily the single best portrayal of a hacker on film that I know of, documentary or otherwise. *And the way Ulrich and Amanda Peet handled the failed intimacy scene is simply human*. I personally enjoyed the cinematography. It's very fast paced, and while I'm sure that's not for everyone, I couldn't imagine it any other way.Takedown is definitely a movie worth seeing. Even a must see for some.
