i must have seen a different film!!
Highly Overrated But Still Good
A Disappointing Continuation
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
What were these actors doing in this exploitation movie? Michael Douglas (he of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest fame) even co-produced this! Must have seemed better on paper.
Another in a long line of performances by Michael Douglas as, "I'm rich and powerful so I can do whatever I want, buy off whoever I want, and by the way, I'm about to close a $120 Million dollar deal so that's worth more than anyone Else's life. Trust me, it only gets worse from there on in. A weak plot with an even weaker ending had me waiting impatiently for the film to finally be over. I would have to be paid a lot to sit through it again.
Sometimes something is not out of reach. Sometimes you wonder how it's possible for someone not to be able to hit something when earlier in the movie that didn't seem to be a problem. And still while the movie tries to break predictability towards the end (which I kind of would have dug, going a different route), in the end it turns out it just used a different way to get to the result everyone should expect.Michael Douglas is mesmerizing even when "being" evil (if you can call it that), though it feels comical at times. Not in the best way possible. It's almost like a theater piece with two men having to survive against many odds ... does it work? Occasionally and there is tension and it is interesting to some degree ...
Having watched The Naked Prey(1966), this film is a welcome edition to the genre. The film is about a shooting accident, that results in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse between two very different men.Businessman and game hunter John Madec(Michael Douglas), hires a young but experienced hunting guide Ben(Jeremy Irvine) out to a field trip beyond the reaches of the Mojave Desert to hunt game. When Madec accidentally shoots an old prospector, Ben insists that they must report it as an accident. Madec, on the other hand, puts another bullet from Ben's gun into the corpse, and after explaining how he can now blackmail Ben with the new evidence, offers Ben a deal: Madec will put him through college and give him a $300k/year job in return for his complicity in covering up the crime. But when Ben picks up his emergency transponder, Madec destroys it and berates Ben for breaking the deal. Madec then threatens Ben with his high-powered rifle, and orders him to strip all of his gear including his clothes, then leaves him in the desert to die of dehydration and exposure.Watch the film to find out what happens next...Everything in this film is top-notch, from the acting, photography, background sound-effects and direction. This is a polished script and well executed by French director Jean-Baptiste Léonetti who has directed the acclaimed French drama Carré blanc (2011). Beyond The Reach is based on the 1972 novel Deathwatch by Robb White. The film is produced by Michael Douglas, showing that he has faith in the film doing well at the Box-Office.Verdict: 10/10. I got my money's worth and more.
