what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

The Three Acts:The initial tableaux: The movie starts in Scotland on the coast of the ocean near the small city of Inveree. A man walks among the rocks and modest cliffs around sundown; the waves are crashing against the rocks and the land. Groups of crows are in flight. The music is techno and overbearing; the visuals were impressive until we had the lens flare dumped on us. The man seems grim and dodgy as he lights his cigarette in the wind, and looks below him at the city lit against the dying light.Within Inveree, night shift police officers ready themselves for the evening, one wakening at 19 hundred hours. The crows are on the roof tops.Delineation of conflicts: Six has a purpose, and he sets off events within the city. As Rachel makes her first walk to the station, Caesar speeds past her and apparently slams into Six. His body is not found, though, just residual fresh blood. Rachel and Sgt MacReady process Caesar, then incarcerate him in a cell next to the more than suspected wife beater Ralph Beswick. MacReady introduces Rachel over the radio to officers Warnock and Mundie, who have recently finished coitus on duty. Sigh. Mundie hints on the call that Rachel has had trouble of her own before being exiled to Inveree. Mundie and Warnock find and bring in Six, who is a bit worse for the auto encounter. They summon Dr Hume.By this juncture, the cast and fundamental relationships are established, so it seems time for the flashbacks to begin. Most of the film's driving conflicts are about the internal struggles depicted in these reveries/flashbacks. Dr Hume has a bloody dark secret that sets him off to kill Six, but he is restrained. Each character has some secret that Six somehow brings to the surface.Resolution: Six seems intent on sanctioning each of the guilty. Who will be left?

This title passed by my Netflix queue many times before a friend's recommendation sold me on it. The name is somewhat cheesy, but this movie is a solid little gem. 95% of the movie takes place in a desolate police station during the worst night shift of all time. Liam Cunningham is eerily compelling as the mysterious wanderer who throws a quiet night into a hellish nightmare by peering into the souls of those around him and witnessing their darkest secrets. The small cast allows the viewer to gain insight into each character and what they have done to draw Six to this place. Most of the film leaves you wondering what role the lead actress plays until it is finally revealed with an ending I will not ruin. If you like movies about the devil walking among mortals, this horror flick will give you exactly what you are looking for.

Truthfully speaking, this movie starts out slow – it takes its time acquainting us with the characters and getting to know their roles throughout the film. The name of the game is divine retribution as strange things start to happen and people pay the dues of their fate. The characters in this film are quite evil and play the part of normal person without err. The film is quite bitter in this respect and the characters have absolutely no regard for the rules, following orders or otherwise treating the other characters with formalities or respect. The film starts out slow, forty minutes in and it still wishes to acquaint us with the characters. I had to start skipping ahead to finally get to where the film delivers. It does get wrapped up nicely, but I otherwise wasn't impressed until the very ending. The film could have had a faster pace with more action; but it gets the point across. It is a good watch along with other films, but I would not recommend it by itself.Originally posted to Orion Age (http://www.orionphysics.com/?p=9131).

'Let Us Prey' is a film that's own creativity is in a way its biggest downfall, which is a shame. The film is set in Purgatory (not confirmed but heavily implied) with a small group of incredibly unlikeable people occupying a police station and being influenced by 'Six', who is the devil (again not confirmed but heavily implied). The problem is that because every character is so unlikable you find yourself unable to care for any of them or their fate. There's an attempt to make the character of 'Rachel' the protagonist, but even she comes across as a bit of a wet paper towel. Consequently the film really struggles to draw any emotion out of its audience. The devil is in complete control of the movie from the minute he enters. There's no attempt to fight back or combat the situation (there is but it doesn't even get 'Six' to stand up) and so what we end up with is something that we knew was going to happen all along taking 90 minutes to get there. It's not all bad though. The character of 'Sgt. MacReady' gives us a fun ride and 'Six' was played very stylishly by Liam Cunningham. The Irish accent can often be very hard to pick up for the rest of us but I thought the majority of the cast did a good job with clear dialogue which was for the most part pretty audible. It's a cool little idea but I think for it to really work the character of 'Rachel' had to be a lot more likable. A fun enough ride but ultimately not scary enough to work as a horror film.
