As Good As It Gets
There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
Horror that isn't horror. Horror that's really a fable. Horror that's centered around child protagonists Horror that humans are worse than any monster. Boring, slow, too dark to see anything. Just long enough for viewers to completely rewrite a better story in their heads before the film is over. This new brand of horror needs to be silo'd and forgotten.
I think these "It's So Wonderful!" and "best movie I ever saw gosh darn!" gushes over this very mediocre film are from people who are affiliated with it in some way. Because I didn't see the same movie. What I saw was a mish-mash of crapola with an annoying brat, implausible occurrences...such as rats chewing through a whole stash of canned food, (which, was one of the most ridiculous things I've seen, I mean these rats were good, they even managed to drink all the water & juices veggies & fruits are canned in, like, as if) and more holes than the proverbial swiss cheese. Badly shot, dark & cramped, wishy-washy adults and when the "truth" is revealed it's kind of meh tbqh.3/10 is probably too generous but that's what it gets.
I wanted to like 'Hidden', I really did. I couldn't help but find myself comparing it to '10 Cloverfield Lane', one of the best movies of 2016, and ultimately finding it inferior in almost every way. The biggest problem was the characters. I couldn't care about any of them. I understand they were in a dire situation, but they were still shown to have almost zero personality. Having them give a well written speech about "miracles" and "appreciating what you have" is pointless if the rest of the time is them being miserable and depressed. Then you consider the fact that they're ultimately being incredibly selfish, and you have yourself a very weak part of the movie. The second problem lies in the pacing. At only 83 minutes it's a very film, and yet it feels a lot longer than that. There is no more sure sign of a fine film than when the time seems to have flown by. Conversely however, there is no more sure sign of a poor film than when time seems to be crawling along and you are constantly checking your watch. This was the latter. The early scenes in the shelter are painfully slow, and by the time the action kicks in it's impossible to care enough for it to be interesting. There is some good acting and a so-so twist that boost it up a few points, but ultimately there's not a lot here. Watch '10 Cloverfield Lane' instead, if you haven't already.
I was skeptical of this but had read a good review so I thought I would give it a try. Starts and moves slow. Picks up speed. Acting better than some give it credit for. Low budget but good. The kid in it is one of the most annoying kids I have ever seen in a film. Part created that way I am sure. You have to wonder WHY some actors take the scripts they do. I understand why these actors chose this film. Different and original. I had to wonder what there WAS about this film that some thought was so good. It is unique is why. Different. THAT is difficult to find in a time of derivative plots. Give it a shot and watch out for the ending. Wait for it...
