everything you have heard about this movie is true.
Crappy film
It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.
One of the most extraordinary films you will see this year. Take that as you want.
Typical bad reviews for this movie read like a 3rd grade book report: I didn't like this because I've seen better zombies... I didn't pay any attention to the rest of the movie. Here is how the adults do it. Biggest problem with this movie is because it was familiar. I get the Event Horizon angle. I also get a similar feeling from Doom. Alien? Maybe. Take away all of the inanimate objects from Alien or Aliens and there are only some rare similarities left. No terror. No Bishop. No power-loader. Hell yes to battling demons. This is not a shocking and gory horror film in which you hope your favorite survives to the end. Instead, it's a trippy sci-fi thriller which has two goals to interest viewers. First, figure out what's dangerous to the characters. Second, have an acid flashback. This genera is difficult to follow for the young and the sober, which explains most of the negative reviews. That also explains most of the 10+ reviews. There are many major flaws in this film which would normally jail it in B movie territory, for sure. But, unlike many other B movies, trash talking it and gem spotting are so easy. There's almost no background given on most characters. You might miss some if you don't have subtitles turned on. On the flip, you can watch it with friends and take a drink when a character dies because nobody cares. Here are the numbers:Acting: 9/10 One of the best gems is how the actors crush their performances.Dialogue: 8/10 Troopers out of their minds, trying to express something, makes some strange poetry. Whit and his wife are perfect.Music: 2/10 Only way to get a worse rating is if there was no music...Premise: 4/10 Why are there so many pseudo-important people who then take up a lot of time by saying unimportant things only to disappear for half, if not all of the movie?Story Development: 9/10 Happy ending?Comedy: 4/10 Many respectable attempts. I laughed once.Sets: 7/10 Wait, didn't he just run and duck past that same steam vent before? I guess that happens because every room in sci-fi has to be small. Detail was good and functional.Effects: 6/10 Talcum and dried blood are the only makeups. Functional for visual and sound.Cinematography: 8/10 Camera operator should get a raise.Editing: 7/10 Why is a dirty jump called a dirty jump? I get the feeling that half of the movie was cut out to shrink it down to only two hours.Grade: 64/100 Rounds down to a 6/10. If you are a fan of sci-fi, then don't miss this one.
Everything about this movie is worth watching. The only reason I gave it a 9 out of 10 is because the beginning and the end are kind of hard to follow. I had to watch some parts more than once just to make sure I was understanding the story, but besides that, overall it's great. Great acting, an original story, taking place in a sci-fi setting but then veering into a horror/survival theme movie, it was excellent. I enjoyed every minute of it. It made me think of other classical sci-fi films I have enjoyed, and was even reminiscent of some sci-fi/horror video games I've played.Don't let the low rating scare you away, you won't regret watching this one!
It starts off with a nice explanation at the start of the movie to tell you what its about. Then you enter a world created by the worst sound engineer in history----or maybe the greatest as he does everything he can to make sure that you can barely hear or understand the absolute garbage script of this film.I had to replay scene after scene to try and work out what they were saying. A lot of the time because it turns out what they were saying made no sense or had absolutely nothing to do with the scene they were in.The producer did a great job and the sets are bang on except for the very strange use of old style monitors with a mono text interface. Why - its the 23rd century - these were old fashioned by 1995!!! The premise is pretty good and so is the general plot to start out with, but the directing and obvious chainsaw editing are appalling and coupled with the gibberish script end up making you wonder when its going to end. There are lots of scenes trying to show people slowly going crazy but they are just clumsy and really badly cut together.Overall the film has that sort of Alien feel to it but with almost zero tension. It feels like the director shot a scene, then went a way for a few months, came back made another scene then went away......its like a series of scenes glued together and ends up making not a lot of sense and certainly does not feel like a story.worst sci fi of the year so far - I really don't see what people saw when they scored this 8 or 9 - you might give it a 5 if you really dig the sets but that's about it.
Where most of the sci-fi movies like this are really just scary action movies in a sci-fi setting, this unassuming title surprised me a lot in a good way by being deeper than that.Without spoiling anything, the setup is pretty typical at first glance, where a team of people are sent on a rescue mission to the most remote mining outpost, where something as gone terribly wrong due to circumstances unknown, possibly a contaminant of some sort. Upon arrival, however, and after events unfold, what I found was that the movie explores the effects of what happens on said team, the effects on their minds and psyches, much better than I usually see. Additionally, the background setting in the 23rd century is well established, even if the movie provides only the basics of it in order to leave most of the screen time to the main action, which is fine. Furthermore, the environments and props, etc, I found very well done, as were the visual effects.I thought the ending left some questions to be thought about, which I feel is a good in sci-fi too. So, all in all, I found it very enjoyable and quite better than the average sci-fi movie.
