The least we can say is that Kicking & Screaming is not Will Ferrell's best movie. But I could say luckily Will Ferrell is in this movie, just to attempt to save this comedy. I'm a fan of the dorkish Will Ferrell and that's the only reason I watched this movie. His facial expressions and nerdiness makes him a good comedian. I like Robert Duvall as well and was surprised that he played in this movie. The story is pretty lame but I didn't expect much from that side, but this was probably one of the worst 'soccer' (or football like we call it here) movies I ever saw. And that just because how they filmed the soccer scenes, completely ridiculous moves, things you will never see in any game, not even from the worst players ever. So luckily we had Will Ferrell, to make us laugh a couple of times, because the rest is seriously not worth mentioning.

It's a nice film to watch and pretty amusing. The movie can't be compared to Talladega Nights so don't try. It's a family comedy mainly for children. Just because it's Will Ferrell people expect it to be nothing but laughs and silly acts but that wasn't the intention here. It had its funny moments and serious moments. A great movie for kids and for parents to watch with their kids. No explicit content but still can make a groan man chuckle.Robert Duvall and Mike Ditka's performances were much better than I anticipated and a bunch of the kids supplied some additional humor. I have watched it many times and even added it to my collection. If I categorize it I would probably put it with Ladybugs or Cool Runnings. Of course not a classic like The Mighty Ducks, Teen Wolf, or Sandlot but better than movies like Air Bud, any Angels movie, and The Big Green which are also pretty good children's movies.

I'm not a big fan of (Will Ferrell), but sure he did it good this time. The story of the movie is old, predictable, whatever, but I loved its new and simple details. Not the greatest comedy, but it does amuse.Deep down inside it's about the reuniting between a father and his son, a very late one caused by the selfishness, vanity, and impudence of the father. And it's about another reuniting between that son and his own son as well, where the movie reveals that some times we, unintentionally, become the fathers we hated. Well, take it from me, some comedies give nothing to their substances, but not here. The level of the comedy itself wasn't bad. (Ferrell) is the whole show. He shows noticeable vitality, using his persona, as a middle-aged, middle-class, so idiot kind man, mixing it with his own style of cute nervousness or outward – mostly fake – coolness. So the best part of this movie is sure the sequences of his character going mad because of so much coffee. It said a lot about his talent and the damages of coffee !In his serious scenes he wasn't as good, mainly due to his face and eyes. Though, he managed to do them appropriately. (Robert Duvall) acted like a real provoker. Despite his old age he looked fresh. Real life trainer (Mike Ditka) was incredible as himself, or the spoof of himself. And I liked how that script went to rescue the team at last by the idea of "doing the opposite of everything I taught you". We have a hero who ended unlike the way he began, with some real entertaining time. Hence, I loved it more than the based on true story movie, from the same year, about another trainer, his son and team : Coach Carter. It is simply better. At least this one has a memorable quote: "If we felt hungry, we'll gonna eat Byong Sun" !!

'Kicking & Screaming' is pretty much a typical football comedy about an underdog team that wins in the end. Nothing new here but the reason why I watched it and enjoyed it was because of the cast. Will Ferrell is fun to watch and a laidback Robert Duvall gives a funny relaxed performance as the jerk dad with a comic touch. The beautiful Kate Walsh plays the typical wife and mom and is pretty much there for star value and eye candy. I also enjoyed the scenes with the kids. The Byong Sun character was particularly funny. The film does occasionally derail as Ferrell's Phil gets hooked on coffee and turns into a maniac coach but then again, it made me laugh. Overall this isn't exactly a great film and it has nothing new to offer but it's good time pass as it draws some laughter. Perhaps that was director Jesse Dylan's intention.
